Yep, but it pairs very well with the 17mm-28mm f/2.8 which is also a very nice lens.

Yes it does, but not everyone wants to swap lenses just to get a little wider. I've always done the 24-70 & 70-200 duo and it's odd with Tamron pairings being 28-75 & 70-180. I can always crop in to make up for the extra 20mm but I can't get back the 4mm at the front end but I don't need/want it enough to buy a third lens.

Exactly. You can never gain the wide angle, always can crop the long end... you guys afficionados of Tamron should try the Sigma for a change, much better lens. Sony GM II? Different class...I own all 3.... I never use the Tamron since I got the Sony btw.
All 3 are good choices.. depends on your budget and needs. I prefer wider so Sony stays.

Long ago I owned the EF mount 28-75. The G2 feels similar in hand to me, both the optical quality and price has gone up some.

I suppose the 28-75 is good when I was young and more cost constrained. Back in the day iirc there was no third party 24-70 option, so the 28-75 was a more attractive kit lens replacement when it was first released for EF mount

Today, for $200 more, the 24-70 art or 20-70 are better options because of the added flexibility of the wide focal length.

If you are willing to change lenses or carry 2 bodies there are even better choices. For example, a 12-24 and the Tamron’s 35–150, or a 16-35 and the Tamron 70-180/2.8

I feel that a standard zoom does not fit so well into a 2 lens kit, it can feel simultaneously not wide and not long enough

there have been many posts about sigma stepper motors having weak performance and various incompatibility issues on e-mount.

crappy focus motors can be far more restrictive than focal length limitations.

The more modern linear AF motors drew me to the Tamron. I need snappy AF when I'm using this focal range so it matters to me. At a wider FOV, stepper AF works fine.

Clearly Sigma acknowledges the benefits of linear motors as they are implementing them in some new lenses.

The beauty of E-mount is the multitude of choices we have. No matter what you might need, there's likely to be a lens available with your chosen feature set.

I have a Sigma 105mm Macro lens. Optically it is amazing, ergonomicaly wonderful, and top build quality. I am very satisfied with it, as I have been with all of my Sigma lenses both Sony E and Nikon F mounts.

This thread is about the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. As I stated in my post, It served it's purpose when shooting this event perfectly. I also had in my bag a 15mm prime, and the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 GM II. That Sony is probably the best zoom lens in any focal length I have ever shot, on any system. I love it. But, at this event neither of the other two lenses ever came out of the bag. This because given my assignment, the Tamron covered my needs. I wasn't missing shots due to FL, or focusing issues. I got sharp, beautifully rendered images, with superb detail and colors. In short, it was a great tool for the job. All this FOMO over 4mm on the short end was not a real issue in this case.

Overall I am very happy with my Tamron lenses in regards to IQ, build, and performance. I am thrilled with the support I get from Tamron in other areas. As a member of their VIP Program I get many meaningfull benefits, ranging from special events, education, service, and lifetime warranty on my Tamron lenses. This level of support is not matched by any other company in the photographic industry. None, period.

These are the reasons I answer the question asked in the title of this thread with "yes, me".

The Tamron is a fantastic lens for the price, especially if you get it on sale. I actually really liked the colors and contrast I got out of the lens. Swapped it for the GM Ii but only because I wanted the 24 on the wide end and they got the GM light enough that it wasn’t much heavier than the Tamron. But I don’t see a noticeable differed in in image quality.

I really liked mine as well.

Sold it for the Sony 20-70G because of the extra wide angle end (28mm of the Tamron was a little too narrow for me).

It is a very good lens, very sharp!

I liked the first version a lot, its small, light and focuses fast. But with this range - I really prefer something a bit wider as I was changing lenses a lot to get a wider FOV - especially indoors where you can't take a few steps back. I moved to the Sigma 24-70 and have been much happier. If the 20-70 was a 2.8, I'd have one and the Sigma would be gone !

Still use mine for tough hikes, paired with the 17-28.

But for general use it has been replaced by the 24-70 GM II, because I too often needed 24mm.

Over the last few weeks I needed to shoot some product and other shots for one of my Wifes Companies. This one is called Finn and Co. It is a beach inspired skin care line.

I used the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens for many of the shots. It performed wonderfully for all the shots I used it on. I am in no way a professional photographer, let alone a product/advertisement/lifestyle pro. But I think the images came out pretty good.

Below is one of the product shots. You can see more of the different product and lifestyle shots I used this lens for on her Company website. (Not all of the images were shot on this Tamron, or even by me. But many were.)

Would a 20-40/2.8 work for you?

I am happy with it. More detail and bite than the 24-105. Not quite as good as the Contax 35-70, but close enough to make me happy

Just got this lens from B&H this morning. Tested it out and everything looks great... my copy seems pretty sharp and centered.

I am really a fast prime user, but most of the time I shoot at tight locations that I have no idea what they look like. This lens will do the trick when I need the flexibility of a zoom.

I actually bought a Sony 24-70 GM (version 1) about 2.5 years ago, but returned it right after the first shoot with it because my copy's IQ was pretty meh and it was quite pricey too, exactly twice as much as this $800 Tamron.

I can't really make the case to splurge on a $2100+ GM II. Tamron it is. Very happy with the purchase. Will get to try it out in real life shoots very soon.

I have Tamron 17-28 and 28-75 G1 and really like it for their size weight and most importantly sharpness on my A73 and A74. So if G2 improves on them, I will welcome that.

Tamron makes very good lenses and some ok lenses. I had the 28-75mm f2.8 G2 and wasn't thrilled with it. I found the vignetting to be extremely distracting at f2.8, f4, and somewhat at f5.6. I also did not like the fact that it was a bit too long, especially when mounted on my A7c. I think I used it twice before selling it. In my personal opinion, it was a bit overrated.

On the other hand, my Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 was an amazing lens! I regret having sold it when I sold my A7c. This is the one lens I would buy again if I ever purchase another Sony full frame body.

I just attended an invite only seminar on current optical design. It was very well done. I think all of us would benefit from watching it. In it the Tamron 28-75mm G2 was examined as part of the where lense design is headed. It is one of two Tamron lenses that has all the forward looking features and design that will be introduced to more lenses over the next few years.

They say that they will post a video of the seminar on line in the next few days. I am not sure it will be publicly available, but will be to all members of the VIP club through that website. I will post the link here when they release it.

I encourage all of you who own Tamron lenses to join the free VIP club. It has valuable benefits. Your purchases of Tamron lens count toward level all the way back to 2011 if you still own the lenses or not.

Did you all know that Tamron will do a free refurb of your lenses annually, including complete cleaning adjusting back to new optical specs, replace all seals for weather proofing, on all your lenses for the full 6 years of its warranty coverage. If you have a lens getting close to that 6 year mark, send it in. You will have a like new lens after 6 years. Also the service is fast. Usually within two weeks, not like a lot of other service departments.
