Wait, I got it now. You added the 13% HST. Yes, it is the price you quoted with tax added, but we usually discuss prices here without tax added as tax varies with location in North America. For example if you lived in Alberta (or went to Alberta to buy it) the price would be $5669 CAD.

This is a really nice release and fixes the size issue I had with the z9. I was looking at the specs and they are very similar to the D500. That was the most comfortable camera I've ever used and hit the sweet spot for me when shooting wildlife. I always thought the D850 was a little large after shooting with mirrorless for several years (for me.) This is basically custom designed for my taste, especially with the excellent telephoto lenses Nikon has been bringing out the last few years.

So, what could the optional grip possibly add besides a change in form?

I haven't had much time for FM lately (started a new job) but it's nice to see everything is exactly as expected if not better. A smaller Z9 is what most people seemed to be asking for and I am struggling to find many differences spec-wise. Puts the A1 in an interesting position, at least in terms of attracting new buyers. I also like that they didn't try to make it too small, though it will be larger than a Z9 with the optional grip for sure. Nice to have the option.

It is indeed $5,399 here in Canada (Z9 is $6,999).

I was hoping to see the 180-600 as well but maybe Nikon didn't want to steal any thunder from the Z8

It will just add battery life (roughly double) and obviously change the ergonomics. Battery life is still a challenge for MILCs with the smaller battery types. Video shooters or those just wanting more endurance will appreciate it, and I believe you can charge the battery within the (detached) grip for added convenience. Overall size will be larger than a Z9 but at least now people have the option.

Good point that they did not try to make it too small.

I am going to make a closer consideration of the Z8 dimensions alone (without the grip). I do not like that the grip is shorter than the Z8.

I hoped for the 200-600 too but suspected it would not be announced yet. Good things come to those who wait

Battery life for one. The Z8 does suffer from a relatively low battery life when used with just one battery. I would opt to carry an additional battery than using the grip however.

That means you could pick it up at your local store on the way out of town. Be positive, it could happen! I have heard that Nikon built up a large inventory of Z8s ahead of launce to do its best to minimize waiting time.

Not a fan of breaking a new model in on a trip...especially when I have the Z9 set up exactly like I want and need it. One last ride for the big girl

Was always planning to. The Z9 was just a stop-gap for me to get into the excellent Z lens system.

My only pain points with the Z8 are memory related...not a fan of the SD slot, nor the door that they're using from the Z7...other than that, it's a total winner for my use. Couldn't care less about battery life, I've had Fujis so nothing can hurt me any more

I'll just shoot to CFE only when birding, and I'll shoot redundant when landscaping.

The Z8’s feature set looks like the “Z9 Mark II” I have been awaiting. I have skipped the Z6 and Z7 series, too, thus far, staying with the D850 and D5, and it looks like I made the right decision, in that regard, too. This does not mean that I am going to be an early adopter. I am simply glad to see that the Z8 is now extant.

I may yet decide that I will buy a Z9-series, as more user reports become available, but the Z8 is certainly very interesting, for my FY 2024.

Ricci said something like Nikon manufactured 12,000 Z8s last month and that it has the capacity to produce more Z8s than it did Z9s at launch. Can anyone put the 12,000 number in context? For example, how many Z8s would we expect Nikon to sell in a year (or a quarter)? Is there any way to extrapolate from that 12k number an estimate for wait times?
