D-Day - The Sixth of June, 1944. It was really hard for my wife and me to visit Pointe du Hoc on 9/11 of 2011, and for all the reasons one might expect. The day of our brief train trip from Paris to Normandy dawned exquisitely beautiful. And so unlike the dark, and deep sadness she and both felt as our guide took us to there under pristine sky.
As I looked at the pictures from that day and from Normandy, Omaha Beach, and then Pointe du Hoc, I tried in these photos to recapitulate what it must have felt and looked like to all the troops, German and American, at that initial point of combat contact. The sky's were anything but placid,
We must "Remember Them." All of them, and at the moment of their death, they all bled the same color. And more was and is yet to come.
