I bought the brand new 2022 M6 back in November. It scratched film straight out of the box, and the ISO dial does not set correctly - i.e. you cannot set it to 100, 200, 400 - just inbetween settings.

So far it has been out of commission for 10 weeks.

I have just been informed that Leica does not have the parts in stock to repair my brand new 2022 M6:

Dear Leica Customer,

During the repair of your Leica product, the technician found that a

part required to fully repair your equipment to Leica standards is

currently out of stock.

Our colleagues and worldwide suppliers are working together to resolve

this issue as quickly as possible. However, this will most likely delay

the completion of the repair.

We apologize for the inconvenience and sincerely appreciate your

patience.

Remember the BS that was spouted when this camera was first released, as to how Leica was now making its own parts? Yeah, sure they are.

I have asked for a refund, we'll see how that goes.

I bought an expensive mint OG M6 from 1987 and was wondering if the reissue would have been the better choice after it had been released.
Doesn't look like it going by your experience.

Right now I can whole heartedly say you made the right choice. Leica cannot fix a camera that they are currently making.
The sad thing is this is the first new film Leica that I bought. All my other perfectly working Ms were bought used.

Leica just informed me that there was a batch of defective pressure plates, and it is that item that they are waiting on.

They were able to recreate the scratching.

Call me paranoid, but it's exactly scenarios like this that make me extremely cautious about new releases. Too many manufacturers these days rely on their most loyal customers to be beta testers, and that just does not sit well with me.

This reminds me of one racing team's strategy for building cars: Benettons were "built around used road-car engine blocks that had travelled more than 100,000km. The thinking was that if the blocks were going to break, they’d have done so already." I apply the same to gear: I didn't touch a Sony until the A7R3 was out.

I too would ask for a refund and move on.

The thing is, the only thing new about this release is cosmetic. Under the skin it's the same old stuff they've been using since 2002, when the MP first came out.
They are just getting sloppy.

Probably keeping reliable suppliers with the kind of parts they need is difficult. But it's up to Leica to have tested these things!

Same kind of thing I keep hearing about the M-11 and one of the primary reasons I don't have one yet.

I agree that this should not happen but on the other hand, they just have to brand a 20 years camera, i.e. the MP as a 40 years camer i.e. the M6, to sell it.
So they do not operate in a really competitive marketplace especially when it comes to film cameras.

And they have been sloppy before. I had horror stories in the 90s. So yes, the digital M had their share of problems and having been delivered one of the very first M8, I'm quite aware but they are not so bad nowadays.

I did not see prices for used original M6 camera versions drop since this new M6 was released.
Probably for a good reason....

I think it’s fair. They had to source new vendors for these parts since no one was making them anymore. There are bound to be some bumps along the way and it seems that Leica is at least on the ball on making sure your camera gets going again.

That being said, it wouldn’t have been too much trouble to give you a loaner while you wait. You’re paying 5 grand for a film camera, this type of service should just be included.

I don't think it fair at all. Especially for a premium priced product. A loaner isn't good enough. Considering that this is a DOA item, they should just give him a replacement and a gift certificate or some other extra for the unacceptable delay and poor service.

I don't know of another luxury brand that is providing the poor service of Leica. Either at the company or store level.

I have heard too many reports of exactly this kind of service and delay when people get new bad products. The M11 in particular seems plagued by this.

Good practice would go like this.

C - Hello Leica my new M6 arrived defective. It is ruining my images and I cannot use it.

LEICA - we are very sorry to hear that. We will put a replacement in overnight mail today. It will have a prepaid label with it. Just put the bad camera in the box and the shipping company will pick it up. Sorry for the inconvenience. We have put a 5 pack of your favorite film in the box too.

Leica would then fix the defective camera and offer it as a refurbished product at a discount.

The frequency of having to do this should be so rare that it doesn't represent a financial problem. If it does then heads should roll and corrections made in the manufacturing process.

That is how a premium brand operates.

Actually they have. Before the new M6 was released they were peaking at $3500. Now Setadel Studios tried to sell a brand new old stock M6 Titanium for $3200, and there were no takers.
On FM a decent M6Ti just sold for $2500 (or less, I'm not privy to the final selling price).
Now I'm not sure if this is because Leica's marketing campaign is effective with the new M6 - putting it in the hands of Youtubers who say this is the second coming, and now their lives are complete - which has resulted in the masses wanting the latest version. Or if it is just the market cooling.
There is a big waiting list for the new M6, and MP.

Leica intends the M6 to be more than a retro novelty. “I know someone who is the only American abbot of a Tibetan Buddhist abbey in north India,” says Pacella. “He left everything to follow the Dalai Lama. The only earthly possession he still has is his Leica camera, which he uses to document his life. Limited controls [and] manual focusing somehow bring mindfulness. Having to fight some odds is a great way to apply your mind.”

Still not the big expected drop as originally discussed. Also, many are likely not even aware of the potential issue here with the new M6 - it is known in the Leica forum and here on FM which will only cover a certain amount of interested buyers. Majority as you said will follow the YouTube influencer hype where this issue has not yet been discussed to my knowledge.
