All in the title.

I have a long trip coming up to Guizhou (3 weeks) and then to Iceland (6 weeks) in the Summer. Would an iPad Pro work well as a photo dump (with an attached Sandisk 2TB SSD) and for editing ? Which version (I do have a 'variable' budget) !

Which editing program would you recommend (I use ON1 Photo Raw 2023 at home)?

Which 20k mAh battery pack would you recommend?

Your money would be far, far, far better spent on an M1 MacBook Pro vs an iPad Pro. I’ve given up editing on iPad or phone in the field as some of the software in my at home workflow simply doesn’t exist for mobile. The 16gb M1 laptop CHEWS through photo editing.

They are actually $300 off at B&H right now as well because they are technically the last generation model.

As someone who uses an iPad pro for editing, I have to echo Scott here. I moved to it for the Apple Pencil, which I don’t use much anymore, and because my older MacBook overheats just by looking at it (a year or two prior to the M1 chip). The display is nice and LR mobile has come a long way, but cataloguing and organizing files is still very poor and my usb c dock doesn’t always work.

Basically the only reason I haven’t upgraded is I’m debating between a laptop or desktop setup in a few years time (after a home purchase)

I travel with an iPad Pro (1TB). Using a Prograde Card reader, I upload RAW photos to LR (Cloud) using LR Mobile. The CR3 photos then sync with my desktop running LrC at home. When I get home I have the RAWs to edit. I do cull in the iPad but don't edit as I find LR Mobile to be limited in functionality.

I leave the laptop at home thus saving 7lbs of weight on safari.

I do keep the photos on a CFe 1TB card as well. So I have the RAWs. on the CFe, in the cloud, and on my desktop.

If the only reason you are considering an iPad is for photo storage then I agree that a laptop is a better solution.

If you are using the iPad for the other things an iPad offers and want to also use it for photo storage then it is a viable solution. Since you are on the Canon forum I am assuming you have a Canon camera. There is an iPad version of Canon DPP that is available for $0.99 per month subscription that will allow editing.

Depending on your home editing software there may be an iPad version. Lightroom and Affinty do.

Edit - I was writing while Alan was posting. I use the same approach. Note that a MacBook Air M2 is pretty much same form factor and weight as an iPad. May even be lighter if the iPad also has the Magic Keyboard.

Not sure what kind of monster laptop you have but a modern MBP is 3.5lbs.

If you use ipad, make sure you have a self powered USB hub. I have older iPad that I use for listening to music, kindle etc while traveling and its port does not have enough power to run external HD as well as a card reader at the same time. If you back up into iPad then it is ok.

I mainly back up my photos on my trip to external HD with built in card reader and use iPad with a card reader to import just a few pictures here and there that I might want to edit while on a trip.

I dont travel with laptop anymore as anything small and light enough would have pretty small screen that I might as well use iPad but then I dont do any serious editing while on a trip and only edit a few pictures here and there for social media use.

I use an iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd gen) for travels and I love it for editing pics on the go. I also use it for events when clients want to upload edited pictures to social media on the spot. Lightroom on the iPad is not as intuitive as it is on the laptop, but it works.

I have other uses for the iPad (watching movies on the plane, games, procreate drawing, showcasing pics to clients, etc…) so it doesn’t make sense to me to bring a laptop as well. A laptop would definitely have more functionality in terms of picture editing, so if you don’t have other uses for the iPad, I would say a laptop is a better choice.

Cheers Scott. However I'm already carrying a heavy backpack and I'm looking for any way to save weight (almost 1 kg difference). I just need a photo dump as a backup and to maybe do a few basic edits for IG and WeChat and review images in case I need to / decide to stay a day longer in any location.

I actually had a good MBP but sold it. Now when traversing continents I take my Mac Mini with me and set it up again when I get there - however obviously that's not going to work in a tent !

Thanks BP. I won't be doing much editing on it, mainly just browsing and dumping to an SSD.

I ditched my MBP for a Mac Mini - works better for my uses and I can easily unplug it and take it with me. Worth a thought if you don't actually need a laptop.

I was all proud of myself this summer getting the iPad Air 4 with its overpowered M1 chip and poof, 2 months later here come the M2s.....

Thanks JR. Actually a huge weight difference. The MB Air M2 weighs 1.24 kg and M1 1.29 kg. The iPad Pro around 468g (WiFi and Cellular). I will use the pencil not the keyboard when hiking (keyboard is too heavy).

I do use the iPad for a lot when traveling (reading books, maps and plotting routes and a few of the apps I use will work on both my iPhone and iPad). The Affinity app is pretty awesome actually - I have it but never use it in between trips (my loss) and will likely stick with that (I'm a Sony user) unless someone recommends something better. I'm still using the M1 (cameras first - just upgraded those and a couple of lenses)

However I love how I can just pack it up, add it to my carry-on, and on arrival in my new home base just buy a nice used monitor and I'm up and running (the monitor I can sell before I leave, probably around what I bought it for) !

Yes the iPad Pro looks like a very viable option for what I want to do (you guys are answering all the questions I had) - and my current iPad is on it's knees and has to be replaced anyway. Usually I won't bother editing but these are some long trips and I'll be suffering withdrawal symptoms if I haven't at least attempted some edits before I get home

They may be easier to use for someone new to Sony but I'd got used to the old ones and knew where to find whatever I wanted.

I only bought the A7r5 last week and haven't had a chance to get out yet, added the 16-35/4 PZ. Such an amazing lens in a tiny light package. I'll be getting the A7r4 converted to Full Spectrum and use the necessary filters for Normal, Astro or IR.

Strictly for a photo dump it's fine (that's what I use mine for, but for drone footage), but any kind of volume editing or mass culling of photos on an iPad is a nightmare. You also cannot use plugins, good RAW converters, or anything like that and you cannot calibrate the screen/brightness for color critical work. If you just want to fix up a couple images to send to family or whatever, it's totally fine, but that's about all I can tolerate on it personally. YMMV.

I also wouldn't buy an iPad Pro at this point in time, the M2 variants were a bit of a flop (nothing really added from prior gen except price) and rumor is that the 2023 versions will be getting major upgrades as well as a real OS (better time to get one or upgrade). If you have no other choice, you can at least save some money on a M1 refurb and not feel like you're missing out on anything.

Keep in mind also that some devices (like external drives) attached to the iPad Pro need external power to run. You can also use wireless drives such as the WD My Passport Wireless or equivalent.
