Hi Joshua.

Have you converted to LED lights at home? What is your experience of the A7RV with electronic shutter at higher shutter speeds under LED lights? There are many features that I like about the A7RV, especially the image stabilization improvements. But its slow sensor readout concerns me. With my grandchildren, I am often trying to keep my shutter speed indoors at 1/250th to 1/500th. The stacked sensor bodies eliminate the banding worry for me.

Hi Peter,
No, I have not and most of the time, when the grandkids are over and I want to take pictures of them, for shooting indoors using either just available light or using flash with light modifier. I am aware of the banding situation under the conditions you mentioned but I have not encountered that situation. That’s why in the post above, I specified as i”n terms file size bit”.

You can check this out to minimize banding issues: https://www.sony-asia.com/electronics/support/articles/00122281# or maybe just use the mechanical shutter if you shoot indoors at home as the last resort.

Hi all, I am contemplating on getting a new camera. I have not followed much on the recent A7RV though I did pick up a few tidbits here and there. So I would love to hear some feedback on which one to get.

What I shoot: 50% family & friends and 50% studio product photography. So what I like about each camera, IMO, for my use.

A1:
+ Top notch at AF tracking that would help me with the 3 active kids I have. They certainly pushed my A9 to its limits: the main point for me to upgrade

Unless you need silent sport shooting or BIF, I can't think of a single reason to go with the A1. I used to have an A1, but sold it for a A7IV because it was such an overkill, and I'm glad I got out it with only a $400 loss (I view that as longterm rental cost). I upgraded from A7IV to A7R5, and the 5 is also an overkill for lots of my use-cases, but better AF (acquisition as well as tracking), AWB, color, focusing stacking (no brainer for product photography), and the new flippy screen made it a no brainer. Today you can get a new A7R5 for $3,400, a used one for even less so I would 100% go that route. A used A1 it at least $1,000 more.

The A7RV is different from the A9 but it is not an “upgrade.” It lacks a stacked sensor. If you need the benefits of the stacked sensor then you know it and the A7RV won’t fly.

For OP use cases I would pick A7R5.

Thank you all for the additional inputs. To me, while kid and family photography might not sound that demanding, it really depends on the photographer to utilize the existing functions. I have had fun with my kids shooting their actions at 20fps and the tracking kept up mostly (so yes, stacked might be nice, not sure A7RV can handle jello effect for my case). The A9, however, can occasionally take its time in term of AF acquisition under certain circumstances (mainly low light). I mainly want a hi-res body that is just as responsive or more and with the any additional built-in function (like focus stacking that I think I can utilize).

You sure this isn’t GAS? The A9 is still a great camera and can still handle what you’re shooting. Glass, I would spend $$$ on glass. Trust me your PC will thank you when you see the file sizes coming from the A7R5 or A1. Good luck.

GAS absolutely . The A9 can fulfill my needs, though I have been waiting for a hi-res camera that can match my A9.

Without GAS we wouldn't have such big GDP

Do your kids play any sports? I cannot imagine photographing my younger daughter playing soccer with anything else but the A1. It's not just about the hit rate which is crazy high, but ability to select the "peak moment". 30 fps / no blackout is not a joke.

The value of the A7RV is hard to beat at the moment. I would put my money there if I were upgrading from an A9.

I agree with this point, because I want to spend the least money and get the most performance, A7RV is indeed a better choice

1/32000 is too important to me to even consider an R anymore. Though I do miss my A7R2 at times.

Great shots! And very lovely colors. The three girts together running with the ball in front is my favorite. A classic image that captures something about girls at that age.

Very nice captures! My eldest is in her swimming phase at the moment, but I would like to prepare myself for the eventual team sport. She's quite an active kid. You're right about selecting the "peak moment."

Nothing much to add but I agree A7RV is definitely the way to go for your intended usage. A7RV has probably best AF on the market, alas saddled with slowest sensor which is why i wouldn't get one, but I shoot a lot of fast action especially BIF. But even for a lot of BIF A7RV would be great, just I also loathe mechanical shutter after owning A9 and now also Z9.

A7R5 would be a different camera but unlike the A1 it wouldn’t be an “upgrade” from an A9. It reminds me of the mental machinations when the A7III came out. People trying to convince themselves it was a mini-A9 at half the price. Nope. No stacked sensor. The A7 and A7R are different lines and type of camera from the A9/A1 cameras. Sony gives you nothing for free. If you want higher resolution and a stacked sensor you need to pay for the A1.

Thank you guys!

It looks like I'm in the minority here, and @hiepphotog you have no choice but to get an A7r5... I must admit I never tried it so cannot comment here. I *guess* it should be similar to my Canon R5 (also R5!) in terms of IBIS and advanced subject recognition. The Sony has more pixels and no AA. The Canon has 3-4 times faster readout but drops to 12 bit at 20 fps. It's great for action but NOT as great as the A1. If I was you I would just rent both the A1 and A7r5 and try them for a week. It would cost you $$ but you won't have any doubts and regrets left like "I should have bought this instead of that". If you try both - don't forget to post your thoughts here. BTW, I think if you wait 6 to 12 months - you could probably get an A1 successor with the same 8 stop IBIS and AI AF chip.

… do u use Efcs on your a7r5?

The biggest adv of stacked sensor for me is getting around the efcs high shutter speed bokeh issue. It is soooo troublesome turning efcs on and off. Worse I sometimes to forget to turn it off and the pic bokeh is ruined.

Leaving it off seems to make the cam less responsive.
