The R8 is 50% more expensive than the RP (same price as R7) and is missing the 2nd command dial. At least the 24-50 is only +$200 in the kit.

I think the R8 is pretty compelling. The RP is a pretty good camera, but is let down by its sensor. This is an RP, but with a really, really good sensor with incredibly good AF. That’s worth the extra money IMO.

RP was released for $1300 and R8 is $1500 - that's a 15% increase in launch price for what is a far more capable camera. Considering how much it has in common with the $2500 R6II, $1500 is a very compelling price in my opinion.

I'm assuming you mean the big wheel at the back (Quick Control Dial 2 on the R6)?

The RP never had that and while I thought I'd miss it (having previous bodies with it), I actually haven't found that to be the case. The two dials (Main Dial and Quick Control Dial) are more than enough. Add the control ring on the EF adapter or RF lens...I can't think of another parameter I'd need to change.

For most R8 users, they probably won't mind it missing.

From what I know right now the R8 is a camera I would consider as a replacement for the R I have been using for the past 2+ years. It ticks a lot of boxes for me and is basically a R6/2 without the larger battery, IBIS and better EVF. This leaves in A LOT of capability for a camera priced at $1,500.

It's not about the RP's launch price because the R8 didn't exist back then. We can buy an RP right now for $999 and for some people the R8 doesn't represent 50% more value.

Very odd the RFS lenses are only 18-45 vs 18-55 and then 55-210 vs 55-250, and at higher costs. In the EFS era, we had coverage from 10mm to 250mm without any gaps.

I don’t mind most of the “side grades” or changes , as I was contemplating using this as a base for adapted EF lenses. But man, that battery… makes sense given the RP body but very disappointing. Battery life is bad enough to kill the whole prospect for me

The cameras (R8 and R50) look good, but the two new lenses (FF 24-50 and crop 55-210) are very meh.

But overall most cameras on the market are amazing, the gains are getting minimal. Canon should probably make at least one retro camera. I would totally buy a retro Canon (either crop or FF) like the Nikon fc. Give it a matching lens and it would be great.

Most people are still waiting for 35mm f/1.2 (or 1.4), it will come.

Just means, I think, that with the R50, should I consider one, I will just use the EFS 18-55 and 55-250 STM that I kept around from my 7D2 days (glad I did now), and just use those with the adapter.

I really wouldn't mind getting an RF lens, but there really hasn't been any that interest me other than maybe the 100-500. I was really hoping they would come out with some interesting focal lengths and aperture combos not seen in the EF space, and they are, but not in a good way for some of these lenses.

I think this camera offers a lot. Traditionally, you could buy a full frame Canon with great image quality, but it would have a low frame rate and slow autofocus with only a few points, making it poor for sports and wildlife. Or, you’d pay thousands more for a camera with many AF points, fast AF and a higher burst rate.

But here is a camera with very fast autofocus… apparently better than the R5’s. And 8 fps (oops! it’s 6fps) is quite fast for sports and wildlife. Yes, there are faster cameras these days, but this is a solid, 8 fps (correction: 6fps) full frame Canon for $1,500. It has twin dials and if you shoot EF lenses, a third dial.

Oh, and 4K60 10-bit video with stellar autofocus.

I was not interested in R or RP when they came out, but this is a compelling set of features. Of course they left things out that their pricier cameras have, but isn’t that to be expected?

Do you have experience with the RP? I don't fine any limitations on battery with mine, almost never use the spare I carry with me when out shooting.

It only does 6 fps in mechanical shutter. Of course, that makes it an entirely useless camera, as we all know. It's not like professional sports photographers were using 6-8 fps bodies with super limited 20 frame buffers in RAW. (oh wait, the 1D Mark II).

In all seriousness, though, 6fps is plenty for a body like this, and given the fast readout speed, the 40fps electronic shutter will be useful for a lot of sports and wildlife work too.

I'm very seriously considering swapping my RP for this as my backup body. I might actually use it a fair bit then too...right now, my RP is truly only for backup, but with the DR of the R6 II sensor, and the super good AF, I would probably use it for lightweight travel work on its own. Would make a wonderful travel camera when paired with smaller lenses. Also, the extension grip for my RP fits this too, so that's great.

I'm pretty excited about the R8, honestly. I bought the RP in 2020 during a sale as a way to get into full frame mirrorless cheaply, and that let me afford some lenses I otherwise couldn't. As an RP owner the R8 addresses the key things I find lacking - general snappiness, autofocus (I have 2 mobile kids), lack of a real silent shutter mode, and some dynamic range issues - while keeping the form factor I really value. I found myself loving the ergonomics compared to the Fujis I previously used (prettier but less comfortable) and haven't suffered for the lack of IBIS I don't think.

I can fit the RP & RF 35/1.8 with the the 24-105L, the 70-200 F4 L, or one of the STM primes in a little Mirrorless Mover 20 that slots easily into a backpack so I can travel, go on family expeditions, etc without getting in the way or making my wife grumpy; in December for instance, I took variants of that kit on a work trip to Oxford and then on a family vacation to Savannah. I already have an extra battery and the R8 will be even lighter than the RP. A used R6 is also appealing, but it's meaningfully larger and I could definitely find other things to do with the extra $400-500 as a hobbyist with limited needs.

The R8 may not be for everyone but I can see it selling well for Canon.

I wish there as an R8.5 with dual cards and full mechanical. I would have been all over that!

I agree, a very disappointing set of RF-S lenses. I will continue to use my R7 with adapted EF-S 10-18, 35 macro, 60 macro, and occasionally 55-250. I was also disappointed that we still have no RF-S 11-22 but Canon would probably dumb it down too.

However I will say that the RF-S 18-150 is better than I expected staying <= f5.6 up to 60 mm and quite sharp in that range. It also focuses quite close, better than its EF-M ancestor. Makes a light companion to the RF 100-400, the R7's main lens in my use. All the EF-S lenses are small and light enough that the adapter doesn't affect use very much.

I bought an RP for an employer project back in 2019 and it helped tip me into the mirrorless world with my Nikon Z6. I'm glad to see Canon's updated version makes meaningful changes that make a really compelling amateur body. The Nikon Z5 has been decent/good for someone who wants a basic mirrorless body in Z land, and I hope both MFG's keep pushing the bar in the 1000-1500 range for basic camera functionality.
