To shoot Europe properly, it demands faster apertures than f4...too limiting. And this is especially true for environmental portraits.

In these cases it's about the person, not so much about Europe. And if it's about Europe as well Europe shouldn't be blurred with a too large aperture.

That's true. And yes, I'm doing portraits as well while traveling with wife and kids. When traveling alone a large aperture is only needed to gather more light, however, for landscapes and cityscapes I can often go by with a longer shutter speed. I definitely prefer great stabilization over a large aperture in those cases, as you don't have to trade DOF.

I do carry the primes, however, that's for the portraits. It's also not a big deal to blur some Europe as I'm living and shooting 99% of my life in Europe anyway. :-)

I love nostrums. ;-)

If a photograph with a sharply focused person and a OOF background is not about Europe... What if the people are blurred and the background is in focus? Does that make it even more "about Europe?" ;-)

You can photograph "Europe" and/or people in Europe with large apertures or small apertures. Sometimes blur is useful and it can tell the story effectively — whether it is foreground, background, motion, soft focus blur. Sometimes it makes more sense to have everything in focus.

There's no right or wrong way to "photograph Europe." You can use large aperture primes, modest aperture primes, zooms, tilt/shift, view cameras, your phone, whatever.

The question is not "what is the right, official, approved way to photograph Europe?" It is, "What equipment works for the way I want to photograph Europe?"

I have traveled Europe extensively on the past 30 years, and always with a 3 lens combo, a 24-105mm f4, a 35mm f1.8 or f2, and a 70-200mm f4, it is a relatively light combo, and i have never wanted for more. The last several trips i did use an iPhone for some great panos.

I find the combo works well in other continents 😁

As always, YMMV

Who's the "I", is another question.

Look, there's someone asking a question and there's someone giving an answer. You can't blame the person giving an answer for not being the person asking the question, and you can also not blame the person asking the question for not answering that question him/herself.

So... who's the "I" in that sentence "What equipment works for the way I want to photograph Europe?" Just asking. Beware of right official approved answers. ;-)

Look, if someone wants to carry large aperture lenses to do environmental portraits wide open at 1/8000th + ND filter to blur Europe that's absolutely fine by me. Do your thing.
