Hi Chuck, I don’t own both, just the 800PF, but I think your question is totally valid and I ponder the same thing. The f/4 aperture letting in lots of light has for me always been the appeal of the 600mm superteles. The new Z one would be amazing with the built-in converter, and perhaps I could save up for it in 2-3 years, but a lightly used FL version certainly seems like a worthy lens also.

EDIT to add that I used to have the heavy G version of the 600/4 and I found it such a pain to be tripod only with a gimbal, whereas my 800 is such a joy to hand hold.

I have had both and sold the 800mm in favor of the 600TC. The 600mm is lighter, focuses faster and has 840mm at F5.6 built in to it. Having had both the 600mm TC and the 600E I don't know if the 600mm TC for 15.5K is justified when you can get a 600mm E for around 7K. If I had to do it all over again I probably would have just kept my 600mm E.

Just food for thought but how about pairing the 800 PF with the 400 f2.8 c/w builtin TC. You get the 560 @f4 and when really looking for speed you get 400 f2.8 that is really handy.

Also with the 400TC, one of the FM members who shoots a lot of birds says it is quite good at 800mm f/5.6 with the 2x, very close to 800PF. So versatile.

I don't have either, but if I was going to own two superteles, I'd be thinking about the 400TC and 800pf combo -- I'd use the 800pf with TCs for extreme reach so the 400TC wouldn't work for me on its own.

I have the 600tc and imho it doesn’t make any sense to have also the 800pf.
The [email protected] is fantastic.

“The 600mm is lighter”—than the 800mm PF?? You must mean compared to the F-mount 600mm. I think the lower weight of the 800mm PF is a major plus.

I have 400TC and 800PF which works together very well. I also had 600/4e FL when I first got 800PF. 800PF is definitely sharper than 600/4e FL with TC14e iii. Not a huge difference but certainly easy to see at 100% magnification but for most use, you probably wont see much of a difference. No idea about 600TC since I never tried one. However, handholding 800PF is much much easier than with 600/4e FL +/- TC so that is a big plus for me.

PS if 400TC, 600TC 800PF all came out at the same time, most likely I would just get 600TC as 600 and 800 is my most
use focal length ( I used to own 500/4e FL then 600/4e FL as my only telephoto prime lens).
But since 400 and 800 came out first, I came to really like the combination and found that I use 400 quite a bit more than I thought and when I can only take one lens, 400 with TCx2 is still very good and I can handhold that quite easily.
But if I go out to shoot small birds where I know I will mostly use 800mm, I still prefer to take out my 800PF.
At the moment, I probably use 800PF more often than 400TC.

I have the 400/2.8TC and the 800pf. I feel like I hit the jackpot with this combo!

Great shot on the Balloon...crazy... 800pf is great and works extremely well, couldn't be happier. I never thought the 1.4tc would be that good on this lens but it is....you have me thinking about the 400mm, probably the way to go. I'm always afraid of reach even low light, never tried one...I need to try the 400mm.

Thanks,
Chuck

Thanks for the Kudos on the balloon!! I love the 400TC but in winter here mostly small birds around (Ducks etc) so I'm using the 800 more. Heading to Florida in 10 days and I know the 400TC will get mostly used. Great combo!

Good luck with your decision, both are awesome so you can't loose!

Are you just having issue with low light? If you don't need the focal length of 800mm, yeah the 600mm f4 either FL or the latest version with TC is the way to go.
I had the 800mm PF and 600mm FL. The 800mm was what I prefer between those two lenses. The f5.6 on the 800mm pf doesn't bother me since the ISO of modern cameras is so good and for stationary subjects, the VR in combination of Z9 IBIS is so good that I really don't miss the f4 and the weight.
However, I sold them all and waiting to get the 600mm TCVRS.

A friend just got his 400f2.8 TC 3 weeks ago and has the 600f4 TC on order. He got the 800PF in the first batch in April.

He put the 800mm though it's paces. Shooting every way possible. 400 straight, then with the 1.4 engaged for 560mm f4, with just the 2x TC for 800mm f5.6 with the 1.4x engaged and the 2.0x TC for 1120mm f8 and even shot with both TC's in DX mode for a 1680mm f8 equivalent FOV and said it held up so well that he sold his 800POF in less than a week after this testing saying he had to really look to see a difference and that was with both TC's and in DX with both TCs was totally acceptable.

My recommendation, if you would only get 1, the 400f2.8 TC or the 600f4 TC, would be to get the 400 f2.8 TC as it's EASILY the most flexible lens over all 3. and cheaper than the 600f4 TC. So I think the very best combo is the 400f28 TC and the 800PF, especially for the money

The 400/2.8 is much more versatile; cheaper, lighter, smaller, and you can add an external 1.4 TC without major penalty. I would much rather crop a good image hard (400/2.8) than record a poor low light image (800/6.3). And keep in mind that mirrorless cameras are very dependent on the max lens aperture for autofocus in low light.

I went through this with the DSLR's, having owned all of the big primes including the 800mm w/ it's matched TC; I sold all but the 400/2.8. If I were going to do it again with the Z9 I'd just get the 400/2.8 TC (but currently just using the F lenses I already have).
