Good Morning,

First try at photographing this with MFT gear and my 1D Mk IV; will be trying R7 and 1DX Mk II next outing.

Regards,

Edd

Interesting to see the comparison of different cameras bodies and lenses.

Those low-light gyms are killers, aren't they?

Thanks for comments; yes indeed on the low and uneven lighting. I'm heading to another event today at another venue and using the R7 with the Sigma 50-100mm f1.8. I also will have my 24-70mm f2.8 and 70-200mm f2.8, along with a 7D Mark II body. Got a 1DX Mark II coming this week that I purchased from Nikon1960, a great seller here.

Your timing on the last shot is very neat. You'll love the DxII in this kind of lighting!

You're not wrong. A couple of weekends ago I was shooting in a gym where I had to use ISO 12800 f/2.8 and 1/800th to freeze the tumbling gymnasts, on a 7Dmkii. As you can imagine, the results were fairly horrendous. Subsequently I have forked out for a 1DX mkii, the perfect blend of performance to value.

Good Evening,

Here are a few shots using the R7 and the 1DX Mark II under the same/similar lighting, then processing the files in DxO PhotoLab (using Deep Prime XD N.R). I'm very happy with the results so far.

Regards,

Edd

Thank you... I've got my timing window in a better range and the combination of the cameras, optics and software working well together is the rest of it. It is amazing to me how far the skill-sets have come to in this age. The photo below is of me prepping for my state championship back in 1968; where has the time gone?

Regards,

Edd

Nice work! The 1DX ii is a brilliant camera. I used mine at ISO 12800 all weekend shooting futsal indoors and using high ISO NR on the low setting (we have to shoot jpg for on site print sales), the files were so clean compared my 7Dii. (as expected). Those R7 files cleaned up beautifully too. I just wish Canon had seen fit to provide a battery grip as one of the accessories. Maybe a more "pro" oriented APS-c body with a BG is still to be announced?

Hi Stuart,

Thank you for your kind words, most appreciated.

I agree with the battery grip; that almost turned me away, but I rented one during the late summer/fall and I ended up with one that I purchased here on the B & S thread.

Regards,

Edd

Hi Edd

I'm glad you're happy with your purchase. The shooting we do requires us to shoot in portrait orientation primarily and for long hours on the sidelines so dual controls and added battery life are a must for me. I was bitterly disappointed when I contacted Canon and they confirmed no R7 BG would be forthcoming. I don't believe the body even facilitates the addition, due to not have the added hole for the pin, to help secure the BG in place.

I know many people fail to see the point in the FF bodies like the R5 and R3 (R6 too?) having a 1.6 x crop mode, but for me it would invaluable and negate the need for a crop body. We shoot youth sports in medium jpg, for onsite print sales to parents and teams, we have no opportunity to edit, so everything has to be got right in camera. Having the added "reach" for field sports, while having full frame for other work, is a game changer for Canon sports shooters (who use jpg), although Nikon have had1.5 x crop DX mode for years already. Its a shame Canon haven't done it with their D/SLRs, because I'd rather use my 1DXii in crop mode than use my 7D ii. That's just me though...... Well, actually I'd rather have a R7 with a battery grip
