Thanks, I have a few more. And this has inspired me to make photos of the tools I used during my formative years when I ran my own shop (wood).
Not sure how it got cracked. I’m sure dad was probably up to his a$$ in a press and he might have dropped it. This was one I didn’t know existed until to went through his wooden toolbox that he got as an apprentice. I wish I’d taken more, but at the time we were living in a really small house in Vermont.
Yeah, i hear you - I love looking at stuff like this - tools, cameras, measuring instruments, bicycles…

Precision pics of precision instruments.
The caliper dial makes it easy to "see" the precision, as well as measure it. While I've used micrometers as well as calipers and dial indicators, there's just something about "seeing" the precision in that needle.
From the precision in the movement to the precise engraving / etching of the numbers to the wearing of the precise knurling, there's plenty of micro appreciation for how these tools are made, as well as how well they measure.
Bummer about the crack in the caliper. But, I'm sure there's a story behind it.
Nice study of your dad's tools. Not unlike looking at old cameras and lenses ... with an appreciation for what they were able to produce in the hands that went before us, and are still viable for us to use.
