p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · GF 20-35 and GFX 100S problem

I just received a mint condition GF 20-35 (from a very reputable seller) for my GFX 100S. I mounted it on the camera and the entire system keeps locking up on me. The camera won't shut off and I've only been able to get the shutter to work a few times. I can't access the menu and nothing responds, but the viewfinder is active. I either get a fast flashing green light or a constant orange light showing until I take the battery out. To shut the camera off once it locks up, I have to remove the battery. Reinsert the battery and the same thing happens.

Any ideas? I immediately put on the GF 45-100 and everything works normally. What am I missing, or is this lens a brick?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this perplexing problem. I've been so looking forward to receiving this lens. What an absolute letdown.

Interesting. I just rented a 20-35 from a well known rental outfit a couple of weeks ago. Did a few days testing and it worked flawlessly except for one very late afternoon shoot. Camera vertical, tripod mounted. Several times, after I fired the shutter the orange write-lite stayed on and the camera was just locked up. (I’ve never had a lockup on my GFX 100 even once in the 3+ years I’ve owned it.) Had to do the turn off, remove and reinsert the battery tray to get it going again. Did some more shooting in landscape orientation w/o further issue. I have no idea if the different orientation did, or even could, be relevant.

Go figure. But I think you’re on to something.

I have a 20-35 on order (to be picked up later this week) and I’ll be watching it like a hawk. There doesn’t seem to be too many 20-35s “out there” at the moment and I’m curious if any other owners have experienced something like this?

Yes, that's me. I'm posting all over to see if anyone else has had this problem. I see you posted on FB to my post as well. I checked my GFX 100S firmware and it's up to date with 1.32. The lens is version 1.0 and I don't see any indication there are any updates.

Thanks… appreciate your response. Could you post a photo of the contacts on your lens? I notice you mention that they seemed more recessed than they should be. I’ll be picking up a brand new 20-35 this week, and now I’m going to take my body with me and give it a good workout before I leave the store!

I have a friend who has a new one (just a couple of weeks old) and I shared your info. He’s going to give his a workout. If you share a photo, I’ll share it with him and have him take a photo of his lens to see if there’s any obvious differnces.

It turns out the contacts are the same as on my 45-100. No problem after all. The seller and I have agreed to return it. Such a shame - it's flawless in appearance, never mounted, but has some serious electrical issues.

I’m glad for you that it will work out that way. Sorry to see you lose what looks like a pristine copy, but better than trying to deal with Fuji while not being the original purchaser.

Thanks for the follow up, and thanks for your original postings on this. It will serve me well to make sure I give mine a good road test before I leave the store.

Regards,
Rand

With these big ticket items, you can't be too careful. Good luck with your copy. I'm sure I'll find one soon.

And we wonder how a single, isolated incident gets blown up to become "all kinds of reports of this problem on the internet"...

Did you call Fuji's customer service about the issue? https://fujifilm-x.com/en-us/repair-and-product-support/#contact_us

Well, I agree that a small sampling isn’t a pandemic. However, in an 18 hour period, since I first saw this, I’ve now had 4 reports of this problem from reputable posters. So, perhaps not a completely isolated situation.

I have that lens. Only used it for one quick shoot so far and all is well. Sorry to hear about your problem. Fuji is good and quick with their warranty service/replacements, though a dealer exchange might be in order.

Did you call Fuji's customer service about the issue?

I wouldn't say anyone has blown this up. No one is reporting the extreme issue I'm seeing, just isolated incidents. Fuji will take the lens back and either fix or replace it. High tech stuff is subject to failure, plain and simple. I was one of the unlucky ones who got a brick out of the box. Dealer replacement would be tough considering the lens is hard to find anywhere.

Same here... it's a wonderful lens, and it works great.

Fuji has the best customer service in the industry (here in Canada, anyway) so it's worth contacting them instead of hoping a bunch of random people on the internet have the answer...

The quickest solution, according to Fuji, is to send it directly to them for a repair or replacement. It will save time and money vs. returning it to the seller to return to the dealer of Fuji. I'm good with that approach. Fuji told me I'd incur a $9-10 FedEx charge to ship it back. I can easily live with that.

Like I mentioned in dpr thread I had similar thing happen with my 45-100mm when I was doing a studio shoot this weekend. I had to remove battery and start shooting again.

I wish there was a way to capture bugreport and send to the mfg in cases like these.

Whoa, same thing happened to me today with my brand new 20-35mm. First time this has happened, I haven't experienced with any other lenses.

Were you able to get the lens to work at all, or did it brick like my copy? Mine arrives at Fuji today. I'm hoping for a quick turnaround.

Yes, popped the battery out and back in and was able to keep shooting. The shot that led to the freeze wasn’t successfully written to the card.
