It rained the weekend before, but it was still rather cloudy on the Tuesday with Mt. Baldy still being obscured but that was better by Wednesday. Rained again on Thursday and the last image here was from last Friday. It's supposed to rain again next Monday. We'll see what Tuesday has in store.

In terms of lenses, that zoom might be a bit short depending on the type of shots you want. When I shot this four years ago on a 5DSR, I used the 100-400 at 400mm. If you have a converter, I'd want that as well.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have a teleconverter yet. Looks like I will have to be okay with lower resolution.

Or you can just order yourself up a converter, which is about $400 for your lens, but you can still make some great images here with a 300mm on your Sony. I'd just want to have a longer choice if possible.

Peter, it’s a really a treat to be able to get to the park from where you are located to capture a very rare scene of LA skyline with snow capped mountains. I like all 3 images for different reasons. Every time I decide to to KH park the traffic is so bad😩

I'm also out on the eastern side of the greater L.A. area and it's not a casual effort to get to to the KH area for times like this but it's a great location. These show what making the drive can deliver!

I am up near Pasadena... KH might as well be in Las Vegas.

It's not THAT far from Pasadena, maybe half an hour if you leave a bit early. I say come on out after our next rain, which might even be tomorrow. Even if you don't take photos the view is just spectacular.

The thermal disturbance wasn't too bad. Just a little but I think that's always going to be there just from the heat of the city, so all in all, I have no issue with a small amount, plus you don't really see it in prints until you go really really big, and then it's just an effect. Ha. The hardest thing to avoid is camera movement, and even though I'm shooting on the largest Gitzo Gigantic 5 series tripod with an Arca-Swiss Cube head, I really should have had a second tripod on the front of the lens. I use 400mm FF equivalent all the time, the 55-250 STM Canon on a 90D or even Rebel is much lighter. I'd probably shoot it at 8 or so, using the IS could get iso 100 hh. A lot lighter and could avoid motion blur caused by the tripod ring etc

We're out in Chino Hills. When we moved in, had a "view premium," we could see from Mt. Baldy around San Gorgonio, San Jacinto and back to the Orange County mountains. Then after a while the trees grew up between the houses and we can't see either the mountains or the neighbor's windows. Although there are still some high spots that give great views. (And looking quickly, I don't think I've taken great advantage of a clear post storm day for mountains and snow recently.) I'd think next Tuesday might be a good opportunity, supposed to rain here, snow in the higher country through Monday, so might be an opportunity.

And if thinking about Hahn for the late afternoon low sun on downtown and the mountains, there's also the Palos Verde peninsular for views over the basin or out to Catalina. Maybe LAX, etc., to use up some time.

That first one - amazing! I've taken this photo so many times but never captured it quite like that.

Every day is different. Last night was much clearer than last week plus I brought a second tripod to support the front of the lens. The clearer air (26 mile visibility) and steadier tripod made a palpable difference. Well, that Gitzo Gigantic 5 series is about as stable as a tripod as you can get but 500mm plus eight miles magnifies the tiniest vibration. Since you're in Culver City as well, maybe we'll run into each other one of these times.
