p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Tamron 35-150mm for Sony - One lens?

I am debating the Tamron 35-150mm for Sony, I used to shoot a lot of weddings but mainly do videography but still do photo for weddings sometimes. I am looking to lessen the amount of gear I have and currently use the 24-105 (most of the time), 70-200 f/4, 55 1.8, & 85 1.8. Do you think I can replace my primes and the 70-200 with just the 50-150? I would probably keep the 24-105 as I use 24 for dance and large formals. I am a little concerned about losing the 200mm reach but think I can manage that. Anybody using this lens and what lenses did you give up and not miss?

You're the only one who can answer that question. I think a rental / audition is in your future.

Have you considered adding a 1.4x converter for the 35-150 turning it into a 210mm if needs be. A converter is small light and easy to carry in a pocket. OK you get f4 rather than f2.8 but so what, that may be advantageous anyway as you would have greater leeway in depth of field. And no doubt you could get away with bumping up the ISO so as to counter the otherwise reduced shutter speed of f4.

35mm max would be far too narrow for me, even 24mm can be too narrow in some scenarios such as group shots in confined areas. Perhaps add a small lightweight wide prime that again is easy to pocket. You wouldn't need to worry about having lens image stabilisation on a little wide lens plus it could be very usable on a gimbal.

Great suggestion but I don't believe you can use one with this lens but will look into it.

Teleconverters are only available for a couple of select Sony G and GM Longer lenses. 3rd party lenses cannot use them.

You can switch to APS-C mode and get that crop, but at the loss of some megapixels.

Sorry, there is NO TC available for this lens. The Sony TCs only works for some Sony lenses and there are NO third party TCs available .

Thats a shame. I have a Tamron 1.4x G2 for my Tamron 70-200 f2.8 G2 and all works well but I have a Canon system. I've still got an old Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS and was with the Canon 1.4x convertor but I sold that convertor as I had no more need for it.

I think it really depends on the look you would like achieve with your prime lens. Often I use prime lens at aperture around 1.2-1.8 to achieve a dreamy look. This allows for separation of the subject to its background.

The 70-200mm f/4 is too slow a lens for dimly lit ceremony venues. Even with optical stabilization you will need a very slow shutter speed to compensate and there is going to be subject motion blur with speeds less than 1/80s. Too short a lens and you will be spending more time cropping later in post.

I need 1.4 at weddings and also always seem to need my 24mm at some point. So, one lens wouldn’t fly for me. Plus its a bit of a brick…

I would never want to shoot a wedding with 35mm being my widest. Also if you only have one lens what if it breaks? The last thing to consider is the weight, its a heavy lens for all day shooting.

I am not looking to shoot with one lens just reduce what I have. I agree that 35 is not wide enough.

I was enthusiastic when I first read about this lens, but once I realized it was f2.8 at 85mm, I crossed it off my list. In my corporate event work, I use my 85mm prime a lot at f1.4-f2.0. I'm just too used to primes on three bodies to give up more than a stop of light gathering for the convenience of a zoom.

Too many dark environments in wedding photography for a general purpose lens to be ideal IMO, unless your style intentionally limits use of environmental lighting indoors

I have shot a few events including weddings with a 35-150, I never feel missing out on the 150-200 range. And it focuses better than my old 2.8 zoom lenses in low light. I shoot wide open almost all the time. Photos are reasonably sharp for my use cses. My other camera has a 17-28 on it and I use it maybe 10% of the time.

My Tamron 35-150mm 2.0-2.8 is my main event lens, with a 1" deep 26mm pancake lens I keep in a tiny belt pouch for wider. With this combo I go much lighter than carrying "the holy trio" I used to carry and the rest of my lenses are for special purpose shots. Great quality, speed, and efficiency with great optical quality.

I'm incredibly intrigued by this lens and the idea of a do it all fast zoom. I've been shooting Sonys for a while not and am fairly invested in the system and all of my gear is beat up, heavily used, and heavily depreciated, but I have strongly considered going back to Canon for the 28-70 F2 and just keeping one camera on me for most of the day. Obviously I'd keep some primes and backup gear for situations that lens is limited but I really think that I could 80% of weddings with one camera and one lens with that setup.

What I'm really hoping is that Sony sees the success of this Tamron joint and sees there is a big market for fast zooms and makes a move. I'd empty my piggy bank for a 28-70 f2 GM that's for damn sure.

There's a post-it note on the wall of my office that says "1,430 grams". Everytime I get excited about picking up a refurbished copy of that lens, I just look at the note and back off the ledge.

I have visions of wearing it on my belt with a Peak clip. Pants tugging to the ground, lol
