p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Big Sur upgrade and Epson P900 color is now way off

I have a color managed workflow that has given me excellent color prints with my Epson P900. I recently upgraded (?) to Big Sur in order to use the latest version of Capture One. Now the Epson print driver looks different with different menus and settings. I tried to print an image that printed very well a few weeks ago and it changed severely. I have tried updating the Epson software and printer firmware. I have recalibrated my NEC monitor with no improvement. I am still using the same profiles that worked well before and Photoshop is managing the color. I have a show in two months and still have some printing to do. Anyone have any ideas?

I've not experienced an issue when changing the OS myself. But maybe get a new printer profile made up for your current printer / ink / paper / OS combination. That might seem the easiest way forward. Takes just a few days to come through and costs very little. (I have PermaJet do my printer profiles, and they're free if for their own brand of paper - cheap otherwise).

What version of Photoshop are you using to print with? I'm in the middle of a big trouble shooting project where I need to be very careful of upgrades to make sure nothing breaks. I have Monterey 12.6.1 on the MBP's downstairs and Ps 2022 was printing funky - light and washed out skin tones but installing Ps 2023 fixed that.

I also have an external drive that I've installed Big Sur on on partition and will put Ventura on the other to continue to figure this all out. And part of that is determining exactly which combos work and which do not. I'm in the middle of a bunch of retouching, bill paying and other legal paperwork this week, so I might not get to it until next week. I know that Ps 2022 on Catalina and Ps 2023 on Monterey are working correctly. Now to test Big Sur.

Also note that some drivers like Drobo will stop working, I believe in Ventura and there are no updates coming, so I you have any of that, you need to plan for it.

One possibility is that the printer driver setup has changed and it is also applying a profile.
Another possibility is that the driver is applying manually set color corrections that for some reason did not default to zero.
If you have not done so already, you may want to dig into the driver setup, which you say has changed a lot, to be sure neither of these is happening.

So far I have not seen any changes in driver behavior with Epson. It does seem to be an Adobe version thing at this point, but, as I said, needs further digging.

I think this is exactly the same problem as a few of us recently came across and discussed in that thread:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1787124/

The short story is that the driver tries to install itself as an Airprint driver which has the side effect of throwing through the window the paper/color management options.

Well I deleted all the printers and added the Epson again. I followed the advice of the previous reply and found AirPrint someplace and changed it. Then the print driver showed advanced media control in the drop down menu. After fiddling with the drop downs for printer settings I got the old familiar driver back. For some reason many of the paper profiles are now missing (from the upgrade on) including all the Epson papers (). I don't use Epson papers but I found their baryta profile to be more accurate than the Canson, Red River or Hahnemuhle ones.

Now my reprint of the original image matches perfectly! Ain't computers fun?

Thank you everyone for your replies.!
