B/W an interesting choice, well done! I tried shooting a university match, got kicked out. "Against the rules" unless I had a family member on the court.

Fast action, low light ... challenging subject ... good start.

Yeah, I shot indoor volleyball at half a dozen local D1 universities for nearly ten years. It was just for my own pleasure although I did post photos (here) for my volleyball fan friends to enjoy. A couple times an SID even asked me if they could get a couple images to use for their post-match article on their web site, but I'm pretty slow at processing images so that didn't work out. Unfortunately, in the mid teens the universities started to get quite anal and wouldn't permit photography with an SLR unless you had a media credential. They were often rude and obnoxious in the way they treated me (and other folks I know). By 2018 I only knew one venue (not local) that allowed me to bring my camera in and didn't hassle me during the matches. COVID made the venues even more strict about what you could bring in. Even though I'm a huge volleyball fan, the whole experience really soured me, so now I only attend a couple matches each season, and don't even try to bring my camera. These days the only volleyball I photograph is beach. Its fantastic because you can usually get much closer to the court and the light is way better. The only disappointment is that it would be run to try the new mirrorless technology for indoor volleyball.

Thanks guys,

Way back, I was a faculty member, small place and everyone knew everyone, for basketball I used to be on the floor often next to the local paper photographer. I lusted for the strobes he had hung in the ceiling joists.

Fast forward, he now works for the university; local paper and media sports coverage is pure crap, or plain absent, and university sports is outsourced to a company that pretty much has monopolized the area/conference. (Lead photos are seldom from the game being covered, etc. etc.- what do they care?)

This was a one-off attempt to satisfy my curiosity using full-frame. I remained in the seated area. Couple of other folks had cameras, guy covering for the media company had a Z9, laptop, and wasn't interested in chatting - he left mid-way through third set.

I've not attempted basketball - seating area changed and now cheer/spirit/dance/pep-band squads obscure end of court vision. I'll stop my rant now.

Anyway, first rugby match of the spring season this Saturday: Crouch, bind, set, engage!

Thanks for your comments,

Bob

Been there, done that. When I was first starting out shooting for a daily newspaper, I had to shoot high school volleyball. Dimly lit gyms, tri-x pushed to 1600. I felt lucky to get a sharp image.

What you got here looks fantastic compared to me early stuff. Now if they could just get more fans in those stands!

Cheers,
Brent

Thanks Brent,

Yeah, attendance maybe low triple digits? And they've gone to the NCAA DIV II Regionals twice and Elite Eight once in the last two years so the level of play is great. In the south football gets all the bandwidth though.

Best,

Bob

That's also true here in the north, at least on the high school level. My wife and I have gotten hooked on watching women's volleyball on the college level and the action is non-stop. It's really fun to watch.
Cheers,
Brent
