Thanks guys. I'm pretty psyched. I missed most BIF with my old A7rII and 100-400mm. The extra pixels on the V are also nice to crop into.

Nice set, Jim. I'm glad you got a chance to shoot this location. I'm hoping to get up there later this week or next. The 200-600 works well here, but I know even the 600 can be a little short as the owls sometimes don't cooperate and come in close. Other days they're right in front of you. There's always a nice mix of SEOs and harriers along with GBH and if you look close perhaps an American bittern or two.
I love the light on the first couple images!

Thanks for the comments and advice Chris. I agree on the 600mm, but as a beginner I also found it hard to keep them in the frame when they did come close. I started out with it on a gimbal, but found that too confining so just shot hand held most of the time. All good fun. I wasn't sure what I got, didn't zoom in to check much in the camera at the time. I was very happy when I got home and started processing. Topaz Photo AI really works wonders controlling the noise.

Jeffrey, guess you didn't hear about my bike crash this fall that tore my ACL. Reconstructive surgery in Nov. - one year without skiing! I'm walking ok now (slow and carefully off pavement) so learning to shoot close to the road birding is my goal this year.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yes, the second is THE best owl portrait I've gotten. Lucked out with evening light breaking through the clouds at just the right time, but the background still shaded.
