At this point, she was put in touch with someone at Epson who gave her a link to some new (?) software for fully uninstalling Epson printer drivers and reinstalling them from scratch.

Can you share this link so we might try to repair our same issue? Thank you.

Sorry for the delay.

I'm encountering something similar with my Canon Pro-4100 using Lightroom Classic 12.4 on a brand new M2 Ultra Mac Studio running Mac OS 13.4.

It appears that Apple’s printer interface seems to automatically switch from ColorSync to Canon Color Matching despite those options being greyed out. Oddly enough, this seems to be triggered when I change other settings such as paper type or unidirectional printing.

Before I started catching on to this behavior, I was baffled when prints that looked great suddenly looked awful. This behavior doesn't seem to happen in Canon's Professional Print & Layout software and my understanding is that it doesn’t use Apple’s SPI. I've tried resetting the print system and reinstalling drivers but the problem keeps happening after a few prints.

Dan,

I found your post more or less randomly after spending hours searching the internet for problems I have with Ventura and printing to my Canon pro-10, when things worked fine for years until Monterrey. It turns out that Apple destroyed the printing flow with Ventura and I confirmed this with a whole bunch of people that also talked to Apple. So the problem is not just with Epson printers but with other brands too. The behavior is that printer settings are reset every time you go to print, which is a royal PITA. In my case, the choice of color

My current workaround is to set Lightroom’s color management to “Managed by Printer” and manually overriding the “Color Matching” settings in the print dialog box to ColorSync and the custom profile for my paper.

So far, this seems to be less prone to randomly switching to “Canon Color Matching” but I still have to triple check before hitting print.

Obviously this is not ideal and I don’t like the paranoia it’s giving me, especially since I have some giant prints that need to go out this week…

reinstalling drivers didn't work for me neither. The only thing that worked for me was:

-I created another brand new user, and printing from there didn't have this random selection of the Canon printing system.
-I finally decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch with Ventura. Since doing that, I only saw that random switching once (and I print quite a bit).

Bottom line is that I still need to check over and over again when printing since I have 0 trust in the OS now.

BTW, some professional printers I am in contact suggested that I invest in Mirage, a RIP that bypasses the OS drivers. It's not a cheap solution (~$300) but YMMV depending on your time investing in printing and your volume.

So far I've tried every approach I've read about for fixing Ventura's lousy Print workflow. I'm on a M2 Max MacBook Pro, so it's only had Ventura installed. After reinstalling Epson's latest driver and doing everything else I can think of, the best I can say is that some apps print as expected some of the time, and no app prints consistently. This goes for both my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 and my HP Color LaserJet M452dw. Capture One is especially difficult, but it's always been a challenge.

Everything worked so reliably with "those terribly old OSes" like Mojave and Catalina; I sure wish Apple would "unfix/unimprove" Ventura! Engineers used to have the mantra "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Lately I'm thinking that Apple's engineers may be thinking along the lines of "if we haven't messed with it in a while, then let's get messin'."

A sad thing is that I've read a number of complaints with Ventura's New, Improved UI that totally match my feelings, yet Apple hasn't changed anything yet and I've seen no indication that anything's being fixed in Sonoma. I guess maybe this is Progress v2.0.

Removing all printer presets solved virtually all problems with my Canon Pro-10 and Ventura. But it’s such a pain resetting parameters with each size and paper change vs using a preset. It is a shame that Apple is ignoring these issues.

This is still a total mess. Before macOS Ventura, it was a pure joy to print from Lightroom Classic to my Canon PRO-300. Everything *just worked* and like all the time, without fail. Not having to ever leave LR, and then also being able to "Create Saved Print" was the real boon.

Now? Forget it. I don't really care whose fault it is, but the fact remains that printing in LR from Ventura is broken. Period. Like you and so many others, I can print ICC managed color prints from Photoshop, Canon's own Professional Print & Layout app, and heck, even Preview.app (even honors ColorSync ICC profiles selection!)

I've posted a longer version of this here, fwiw:

As much as I really want to jump down that rabbit hole, I'm really leery at this point. Because, if a new, virgin user account solves all the printing woes in LR on Ventura, how would any of us even know where the problem is on our original account? I mean, wouldn't that be the ultimate goal of the test - fixing the original problem?

I *do* appreciate the efforts you made. But man, we have several companies here worth trillions of dollars. Surely they could throw some people power and cash at this problem and get things fixed. It's been almost a year!

I'm so glad that *somebody* has some resolution to this infuriating and expensive problem. Sadly, for me (and I think many others) it's totally NOT fixed. From my post on the Adobe forums:

Wait, so the problems go away if we blow away all our previous presets AND/BUT don't create any new ones? How bizarre. Another user said they simply created a fresh macOS account and that seemed to fix the problem too, but that method is essentially just blowing away any previous presets too.

Good grief, I don't really want to do this, but if it's what's required I guess there really isn't a choice. What will really irk me is that I have scores of "Saved Prints" that of course use said presets, and really made printing from LR a really joy in the past. Oh, well - so much for progress.
