ON1 Sky Import

My first attempt at importing a Sky preset from ON1 to this picture. How realistic does it look to you as shown. I'm mostly concerned about where the horizon is overlapped by the Sky import. Original is just a flat, very light gray sky. All input greatly appreciated. TIA, Anthony

Based on the light hitting the buildings, the sky, to me, looks over-saturated a bit.

The buildings look like they were shot on a dull overcast day, the sky does not.

Thank you for your take on it, Jerry. The Sky option is all presets, so it is highly probable I selected the wrong one, or, I should first have selected the preset, added it, and then went to work on structures. Alternatively, and probably the best of all choices is that I should just have trash canned the photo in the first place. The original was hugely overexposed, not to mention that it was taken through a window at the back of where I live, and with the lens held at an angle as well.

Oh, well, nothing better to do on lousy Wx day in Philly. I appreciate your input, Sir. take care, Anthony

There are several issues to consider when doing sky replacements as others have observed. Lighting in terms of source, color, amount should be as similar as possible. On1 allows for independent adjustments so you can adjust temperature and tint to approximate each other. Additionally, it is helpful to make adjustments in the sky replacement module to improve blending via the various adjustment sliders, blurring the sky appropriately, adjusting the horizon, reducing the opacity, etc. After doing this, applying a global photo filter, LUT, or split tone can unify the appearance.

There are a variety of tutorials on youtube and elsewhere which you might find useful.

Don't give up because with just a few adjustments within the program and a bland photo can be an enhanced artificial modified photo.

I was outside today and everything was rather gloomy due to the weather and took this shot for you. The original was rather bland so I did a quick edit in ON1 sky replacement to add a bit of drama to the scene. It's not perfect but you get the point... I hope.

What’s with the green clouds? Just does not line up with the rest of the image.

There are any number of ways to making replaced skies look more natural with the foreground. One that occurs to me is the Sunshine filter in Effects. In my experience, the usefulness of this filter goes well beyond what is inferred by its' name.

It would be interesting to see what might change if you masked in the foreground (effect applied to foreground only), applied the sunshine filter, made some adjustments to make it a bit more subtle, etc. I generally reduce the default strength from 50 down to 40 or lower, modify warmth, and so on. Quick to try, if nothing else.

Sure, but the green tinted clouds totally clash with the foreground. If that’s your goal, then great…just giving you some feedback. That image you presented does not look natural to me.

It's a good looking sky for the image, but I agree that a green tint looks weird. A slight blue tint usually works (for me) for stormy skies if I'm not going B&W.

And to the OP. I don't personally think there's much wrong with the sky you chose. It's far from a blue sky, plenty of cloud around to explain the low contrast light. I would bump up the shadows though (of the castle) as that draws my eye more than anything.

Thanks, photogs, for your input. I'll revisit the ON1 setting to see what I can learn. Chez, I can attest to "green" clouds, just as seen here, but never again. I encountered them many years ago while flying my buddy's general aviation Piper Arrow 200 over northwest FL, about 50 miles or so NW of Tallahassee. It turned out that I had stupidly entered a line of embedded thunderstorms. From a distance the cloud formation in front of me looked a strange "dark" color, but, as a newly instrument rated pilot, I saw it as a learning experience. IT WAS!! Color of the interior of the interior of the cloud formation was "puke green." I'll spare you all the details of the 30' I was in the clouds. Suffice it to say it's a doggone good thing I had one helluva good old school instructor or I wouldn't be typing this now. Meanwhile, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

I appreciate the feedback and I'm not offended in any way. When I posted the edited image I used the green clouds because to me they are a sign of some rather miserable weather that lie just ahead and to me that's adding drama as I mentioned in my original post to the thread. Green clouds can be a sign like red sky at morning sailors take warning...

Here's a quick edit to the same photo for those who have never seen the green and prefer a break in the clouds with blue sky. Keep in mind this is a "quick edit".

What if you captured a great sky...but the subject sucked...would you replace the subject? Heck...would you replace both the foreground and sky? IE: create something that was not there?

I personally would not replace a sky...if nature does not give you something great one day...just go out another day and capture it.

Clouds still way to bright for such a bleak image. I have no issue with just leaving the original dull sky there...that is what is being portrayed in the rest of the image...why do you want to change that?
