Chuck,
I used my Z9 extensively over the past year and experienced the same thing several times. At first I thought it was “user error;” some odd combination of bumping the wrong buttons at once. Then, firmware 2.11 came out in August: “Fixed an issue that in very rare circumstances would cause the camera to stop responding.”

Naturally, I loaded the firmware ASAP and I was thrilled that the lockups should be fixed.
Imagine my disappointment when a few days later it happened again.
I’ll spare you the long story, but if I were you I’d contact Nikon ASAP. I imagine what you experienced is similar to this video:
By all means, make a video of the issue if it repeats, document all the details you can think of, I had two pages of settings, modes, etc. Let Nikon know you understand that this is occurring in some other Z9s. Mine has been in the hands of Nikon Canada Service since I’m Canadian. They’ve had it for three weeks and they tell me they are working with the engineers in Japan to troubleshoot.
Here’s the bad news: You say you’ve had your camera for over a year. I expect that means your warranty just expired. Still, Nikon might honor the warranty for this issue, but don’t wait.
The other bit of bad news: For some, this is the behavior experienced before the Z9 “bricked.”
The one thing I did differently than in the linked video was I turned the power off and waited, about 30 seconds. At that point it would “turn off” on its own. Others have pulled the battery without waiting. I honestly don’t know, but I’m guessing that it’s better to let the camera do what it does on its own, if it will, than to pull the battery. Others, had a brick when they reinserted the battery. That said, the last time I had this happen I waited about 2-3 minutes and then I did pull the battery. Fortunately, it worked normally after I waited about 30 seconds and then reinserted the battery.
Good luck!
Dan
