Hello, I have the camera for just over a year and all has been great, I updated latest firmware and now not sure if it's the firmware but the camera has been locking up when focusing on the subject,,, I may get 10 plus frames off and then it stops,,,I shut it off to the off position and the camera stays on showing the locked screen... I remove the battery and it works for a bit then it happens again...any ideas...should I reinstall the firmware again ? And i tried different cards.

Thanks,
Chuck

Chuck,

I used my Z9 extensively over the past year and experienced the same thing several times. At first I thought it was “user error;” some odd combination of bumping the wrong buttons at once. Then, firmware 2.11 came out in August: “Fixed an issue that in very rare circumstances would cause the camera to stop responding.”

Read more: https://nikonrumors.com/2022/08/29/nikon-z9-firmware-update-version-2-11-released.aspx/#ixzz7qtdlRMAX

Naturally, I loaded the firmware ASAP and I was thrilled that the lockups should be fixed.

Imagine my disappointment when a few days later it happened again.

I’ll spare you the long story, but if I were you I’d contact Nikon ASAP. I imagine what you experienced is similar to this video:

By all means, make a video of the issue if it repeats, document all the details you can think of, I had two pages of settings, modes, etc. Let Nikon know you understand that this is occurring in some other Z9s. Mine has been in the hands of Nikon Canada Service since I’m Canadian. They’ve had it for three weeks and they tell me they are working with the engineers in Japan to troubleshoot.

Here’s the bad news: You say you’ve had your camera for over a year. I expect that means your warranty just expired. Still, Nikon might honor the warranty for this issue, but don’t wait.

The other bit of bad news: For some, this is the behavior experienced before the Z9 “bricked.”

The one thing I did differently than in the linked video was I turned the power off and waited, about 30 seconds. At that point it would “turn off” on its own. Others have pulled the battery without waiting. I honestly don’t know, but I’m guessing that it’s better to let the camera do what it does on its own, if it will, than to pull the battery. Others, had a brick when they reinserted the battery. That said, the last time I had this happen I waited about 2-3 minutes and then I did pull the battery. Fortunately, it worked normally after I waited about 30 seconds and then reinserted the battery.

Good luck!

Dan

Thanks for your response...that's what was happening... But I did the resets and I have shot over a thousand shots using all function buttons and so far no issues !

Hope it holds up,
Chuck

Chuck, like you, I hope your camera holds up.

Some had their Z9 exhibit the lockups soon after purchase and frequently. In my case it was rarely, no more than 10 times in 500,000 shutter counts. Totally unpredictable. No more than five times after firmware 2.11 as I recall at this point. (I was using it for sports four or five days per week, for six or more hours per day, usually frequent bursts of 20fps.)

Still, I think you would be best off if you notified Nikon that you are experiencing the issue. Get it on record, in an email. It might help if six months from now it bricks on you. Otherwise, Nikon is likely to say, “You’re six months out of warranty and it just happened. Send it in and we’ll bill you for the repair.”

Best of luck to you. Most of all enjoy the camera, it’s great and a lot of fun to use!

Dan

Chuck, Good luck. Hopefully, Nikon will honor the warranty, even though it's expired. Let me know how it goes.
I sent my Z9 into Nikon Canada on December 21. Because of the holidays they didn't really get to work on it until January 7th or so and they are still working on it. I told them to keep it until it's truly fixed. The good thing is they are working with the engineers in Japan on the issue. The bad thing about that is it probably goes very slowly with the time zone difference.
Again, good luck!
Dan

At least you have a diagnosis Chuck.
I sent my Z9 to Nikon Canada over 7 weeks ago. As of a few days ago all I've received was an emai stating "Nikon Japan, still investigating. It will take a little bit of time."
It sounds like you'll have your camera much sooner than I'll have mine.
I hope to hear more good new from you.

I'll be interested to hear what you learn.
On my end, all I can tell you is I sent mine in 66 days ago, still no word since I last posted.
Do keep us posted please on how it all works out.

I called today and not much info other than I got charged a lot less...I guess the issue they thought in the original invoice was not found . maybe something in the firmware... they went and cleaned the sensor.....went through everything...camera looks new and for now working fine .
