Just came back from a weeklong family vacation in the Big Island of Hawai'i... And for only one day, I could leave the family at the resort and go out photographing birds. I spent a couple of hours on Saddle Rd in search of Pueo, the Hawaiian Short-Eared Owl, and then went on a tour of Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge with Jack Jeffrey (http://jackjeffreyphoto.com).
Jack is a former biologist who has been in conservation activities for 50+ years in the Big Island and sounds like a walking encyclopedia on native Hawai'i plants and birds. Call him up if you ever visit the Big Island. Although his tour was fantastic and I learned a lot, photographing those small birds in the forest refuge proved really challenging, both because of the far subject distance and also the very challenging lighting conditions. Because of that, all of my small bird frames below are huge crops (despite being shot at 840mm) and at very high ISO's (I unfortunately did not have my 600 f/4 prime lens with me and only carried my 200-600mm), and hence the IQ leaves a lot to be desired, and I cannot really make large prints. But still I am pretty happy to have had the opportunity to shoot these birds, most of which are unique to the Big Island, and are very rare or even endangered.
Thank you for looking and hope you like them...
