p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Has anyone tried mirrorless and decided to go back to DSLR

I am curious if anyone has given mirrorless a good try and decided to go back to DSLR. And, of course, why.

Also. Who routinely carries both? Why?

i still use both but mostly "mirrorless" these days. it's not all that much of a difference for me. in the end is what you're carrying at the time what you can do with it in the particular situation.

cameras:
Sony RX100v
Nikon D500
Nikon Z6
Nikon Z9

they all have delivered at the appropriate times.

I used to routinely carry both DSLR and mirrorless.
D810 and A7r/A7r ii, D850 and A7r ii-IV, D6 and Z7 i-ii,
That all changed when Z9 came out and I don't use DSLR anymore.

At earlier stage of mirrorless, I still need DSLR for action, wildlife, birds but love mirrorless for street, ease of manual focus with manual lens, more compact (but don't love using small bodies with bigger, heavier lenses). For me, Z9 (and for many others, A9 or A1, R4, R3 etc) finally put my DSLR to rest as
it has all of the advantage of mirrorless and does not give up anything much to DSLR in general.

I almost did but when Nikon released the Z9 and the 400 f/2.8 TC, 800 PF, and 400 f/4.5 lenses I stopped looking at the classifieds. And of the four Z mount products I mentioned, I only own the least expensive of them. The future and the potential is clear.

Honestly, I wouldn’t even buy a new D850 + 500 PF for $4000 total, because even though the D850 smokes my Z6II, that $4000 will buy a future Z body to pair with my 400 f/4.5 and 70-200 f/2.8 S lenses and allow me to shoot all future Z lenses as well. Such lenses likely include lighter weight, improved IQ 180-400 f/4 zooms, a lighter weight 300 f/2.8 that may have an internal TC, a lightweight 600 prime and others.

I added a Canon M3, an APS-C mirror-deprived camera, which I really liked, but, kept using Canon DSLRs. Hurricane Harvey ruined the M3, and ended my foray into Canon mirror-deprived cameras. I still use Canon DSLRs.

I added a Nikon 1 V1, and used it enough to realize that mirror-deprived cameras do have some advantages, including auto-focusing with a TC + lens combination that resulted in an aperture effectively smaller than f/8, but, I have continued Using Nikon DSLRs. (My wife is a Nikon-only shooter, and the more-senior shooter, by far. I have shifted to Nikon DSLRs, since early 2018, so that we can share lenses and flash units, but still use Canon DSLRs for macro and close-range shooting.)

It is my wife who has added an FX Z camera, a Z6, with the 24-70mm f/4 Z kit zoom, and used it numerous times, but, she still loves her D850. She also uses a P1000, for the times that 3000mm is more important than an FX or DX sensor. Use the right tool for the task. The Z6 is an excellent social gathering camera.

We are following the Z9, recognizing its usefulness for “citizen scientist” nature/wildlife photography, especially in very low light. Being retirees, we do have to pay attention to our budget, so, there will be no big, sudden switch to Z. I doubt that we will stop using our D4s, D5, and D850 cameras, in the foreseeable future, just because we would have added a Z9.

Just as I shifted toward Nikon DSLRs, while keeping most of my Canon equipment, we will probably shift toward the Z system, while keeping most of our Canon/Nikon DSLR equipment.

Z* made all my AF-D glass obsolete. Now my DLRs see more use. Plus I have a couple IR converted DSLRs that work very well with older screw drive glass. I have considered dumping the Z7 but the IBIS with VR lenses overcome even my shakey hands.

Still using both but for my purposes (mostly landscapes and cities) mirrorless cameras are more capable - mostly due to IBIS, but also the quality vs weight of the Z lenses.

I‘m using my DSLRs (D700, Hasselblad H3D) just for fun and often think about adding a more modern Nikon with 24mp+*. There’s just something nice about an OVF sometimes..

*e.g. a D7200 and 18-55mm + 55-200mm to see what I can achieve with such ‚lowly‘ gear

Actually I‘m almost sure that updated versions of the D850 and D500 could still be a commercial success for Nikon if they focused on evolutionary changes to keep R&D cost relatively low (maybe improved metering / AF sensor but same AF array, etc). But it would slow down the Z adoption so Nikon is probably not that interested for strategic reasons

Nope, no nostalgic feelings whatsoever to my DSLR’s even so I loved my D850 and D5.
The new Z mount are here to stay and as you can see is Nikon putting all their research now in new Z bodies and lenses but also making more and more F mount glass obsolete.
All the more signs that new gear will be Z and the F mount folks can keep enjoying their superb glass on their F mount bodies.

I have a Z9, but miss my d850 everyday. I'm starting to get used to the Z9 though.

I use a D500 with 24-120 VR AFS, 70-200 VR AFS or 70-300 AF-P for shots of runners or bicyclists as they approach. I use Z6 and Z6II with Z mount lenses for everything else. I rarely use an adapted F mount lens on a Z body.

I might get a D850 for backup and occasional desire for higher resolution. There have been some really good used deals recently. Z9 is too rich for my blood and who knows the cost and when a Z8, Z6III or Z7III will be readily available.

Not back per se...but keeping for sure. Plan on picking up another D500 this year. I shoot Sony, Olympus mirrorless and Nikon DSLR.

I don't see any reason to make a choice one way or the other. In fact, I have the Sony and Olympus mirrorless for compact size. Really enjoying the compact Sony G series and Sigma i Series lenses but my favorite cameras are still DSLR's.

I go back and forth between both depending on what the event is. I'm not ditching DSLR, till all of mine burn out and can't be serviced anymore. A lot of my ad work and portrait work gets done on mirrorless though unless something is being serviced and a DSLR has to step in. I can basically shoot on both but if I ever have to do any weird angle live view shooting portraits then I'm using my Z9 or Z7II and the tilting screen on the Z9 is a life saver at times.

Same here. I use mirrorless most of the time, but in some situations the optical viewfinder in my DSLRs is the better choice.

I hear David Copperfield is among the very few that still refuse to go mirrorless

Love the Z9 and keeping the D5. I still enjoy the D5 especially for low light stuff and enjoy it with my F mount glass that I will be keeping as well as an immediate go to as a backup camera. Currently sourcing the z 24-120 which will be my every day lens on the Z9 when it’s not in event service.

I would never go back to full F mount but don’t feel my F mount system is obsolete in any way.

I’m 100% sure that Nikon cheated their customers with Z - Z II 6/7 first editions. A lot of bugs, bad autofocus. It was a kind of joke. Z9 is the first real mirrorless camera. But! I don’t trust Nikon anymore.

MLC is the future. But Nikon screwed it up. So if we are talking about NIKON I prefer their DSLR. Because any other options are the mess.

While I agree that on release the Z6/Z7 cameras were horrible, and overpriced to the point I did feel cheated when I received my release version Z7 (so bad it drove me to another brand), Nikon kept working on them. The Z6II/Z7II are now to the point that they are just a bit uncompetitive in the market, but to call them cheating their customers is an overstatement of their deficiencies. They currently trail primarily in AF, workflow, and a few other minor things against similarly positioned cameras. They have great sensors, good ergonomics, produce excellent images. They are entirely suitable for many genres of photography.

The Z9 is superb and a home run flagship camera.

The Z glass is overall superb, and some lenses are industry leading. Particularly the long tele primes.

Nikon now has a firm handle on mirrorless design and performance I think. I am looking forward to what their next generation of cameras brings. Never forget that Nikon made the D850 which still ranks as the best overall DSLR camera ever made. They have the potential to repeat this in mirrorless.

Nikon has a long history in photography and is trustworthy in the long run.

How many firmware updates have we got for Z 6/7II? What are the improvements? Have we got anything significant since the release?

Nope!

I sold my Z6 and bought Z 6II at the day they were arrived in Moscow for the first time. Do I have the same dumb autofocus? Yes I do!

Or you’ll get the wide zone with face detection they’d said to me. Because we’ve added doubled CPU. Really? It’s need to add the second CPU? But why are the AF still focusing on trees thinking that there is an eye? Why don’t you want to fix this bug all these three years?

History! Trustworthy! It sounds nothing for Nikon after the situation with Z6/Z6 II

No changes, no bugs fixing for the Z6 II after the day of release. No improvements. All their power are focused to Z 9. Okay! Got it! Without me, please!
