Not sure if it is because I use Nikon, but this heron would not give me the time of day... as I get close with gifts, he (?) takes off, even if it is toward frozen water.

Yes, it's reading the bright white print on your Z9 and running away. Some birds are shy. Take nonmental photos from the distance. Move in slowly. If you are using a tripod, plant it with your back to the subject so your tripod legs don't look like there lunging at the bird,
