Despite the R3 giving up 2Mpx from the 1D4, its ISO performance and better detail rendering, coupled with all the other goodies, surely makes up for that?
The 5d4 beats out the 1d4 for resolution and IQ, as does the R5, so there has to be more than just resolution That would draw you. There are at least three missing R models at this time to plug some holes, so your desired R equivalent 1D will come.
I know what is available and I know what I want.....and I can still make photos with what I am using and I can afford to wait.
I want an R3 with higher resolution. I want a R5 with a stacked sensor and a real battery.
When Canon took their most durable bodies over 13 years from 18MP to 20MP to 20MP to 24MP, they did not keep up with Nikon and Sony.
To be fair, the output from the R3 looks great for 24MP but I am not sure I will see a significant difference in the final output compared to what I can create now to justify the expenditure.
I am also well aware that the R3 can do magic with the AF for small birds in flight but that isn't real high on my personal goals. I currently have no problems with action with mammals and large birds in flight.
I want a large (something that fits giant hands), durable, weather resistant Canon body with a stacked sensor that has the IQ and resolution to compare with the A1, Z9 or even the D850 for that matter.
I don't mean to start an equipment debate or to to tell others what they should do and what cameras they should buy.
I am just trying to explain that I know what I want and need and hopefully sharing my opinion with less experienced photographers will help them understand that they don't need to spend a pile of money every year upgrading their gear constantly to make good photos.
For 95% of what I shoot, I don't believe you could tell the difference between the final output of the R3 vs the 1DmkIV.
