p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Recommend a good strap for over the shoulder carry.

I am on the continuing hunt for a camera strap.

What I want is an over the shoulder strap, not cross body, that doesn't slide off your shoulder.

I just ordered an Olympus OM-1 with 12-40 f2.8 lens in anticipation of replacing my Canon 5D IV. I am sure the factory supplied strap is awful.

I have tried the Peak Design Slide and hated it. The OP-Tech straps are comfortable when standing but walking the neoprene
stretches so the camera bounces around. I have an Up-Strap and am sort of happy with it. The grippy-ness is excellent but it is not the most comfortable.

I need some suggestions.

Are you trying to emulate the Schwalberg strap/button technique?

The answer is no. I have no idea what the Schwalberg strap/button technique is.

I am just looking for a comfortable camera strap.

Domke Gripper, 1 1/2". Great security & comfort, no bounce. I reverse the strap ends and add QR gizmos (can post images, if interested), but it's a great strap straight out-of-the-box, or bag.

I use 1" Grippers for small cameras, like the Fujifilm X100. The 1 1/2" straps are comfortable with heavy stuff, up to something like 1DX + 70-200/2.8 L IS II.

the basic issue is that nothing is perfect all of the time and everyone has different views of relative "comfort". "taste" varies widely.

You might want to visit a local camera store and test one or two if possible - literally any strap will hold your camera, but only you can determine if it feels comfortable to your skin.
Then ofcourse, there are some other small issues like connectors and connection/attachment points which user experience can indeed help - as feedback

I have an EM1mk2, usually with the 12-40 mounted, and find the rope style (aka sailor, cord) strap to work well for me.

for my R3 I have the Custom SLR Glide One Strap with Black C-Loop, customized with a different connector. I like it better than the Blackrapid straps, but either type might be a bit overkill for the OM-1

I realize this is totally subjective but the suggestions are welcome.

I am learning about brands I never heard of or forgot to look at. Keep the suggestions coming.

The problem with "local camera store" is the nearest one is 75 miles away. B&H is 2.5 hours away. I rather just order a couple straps then spend hours in the car. Plus how many shops are willing to open a package to let you try the strap?

See this thread - https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1698824/0#15581772

I have the Magpul Dual Sling Gen2 MS4 Strap - Is the Magpul MS4 Rifle Sling Actually the Ultimate Camrea Sling

And you definitely don't have to worry about it coming apart. As someone here once said, anyone trying to snatch that camera from you when attached to the strap will take you with them

I have that strap, and indeed very sturdy and not leaving doubts about connection strength.
However, it seems that I am more of a 'soft-neck' kind ()
was able to find an add-on shoulder pad for it, which softens things a bit, but it gets stuck on the sliders once in a while

Very odd. I did that exact search last night before creating this thread. I got maybe 4 forum threads and the rest were buy/sell posts.

I am also a shooter so I have lots of different rifle slings around. The Magpul slings are well built but not sure about comfort when wearing just a t-shirt. I would think it needs some padding but if I can find a way to connect it I would try it out. For the military they are comfortable because of all the gear they are wearing.

Yeah, there is no perfect strap for everyone so yeah, there's also going to be a lot of "it depends". That said, depending on gear, I mainly use mine with a D850 + AF-S 70-200 2.8E which comes in around 5lbs, I suppose walking around with that all day would make one beg for a shoulder pad. For me, I'm not walking around with my gear all day or even hours so the strap as is doesn't bother me, but you do have a valid point.

BTW, if you look at my linked post Leofoto makes a knockoff at a cheaper price. Now I have a Leofoto strap I got for my Leofoto tripod, and it's well made, and hasn't given issues, but...

Since my main enjoyment is travel and street photography I am walking around all day with the camera slung from my shoulder.
@Norm Shapiro I have an Upstrap on man. 5D IV and it works great for anti slip but it could use some padding. When wear a coat in colder weather it is great but in a t-shirt it needs a bit of padding

well, look at from the point of view with padding and a t shirt its going to get a little warm. nothing's perfect all of the time.

i was just in JP a few weeks ago for a few weeks and using the Magpul MS4 that i have had for years. still the best for load and positioning. Z9 w/24-120/4 and 70-200/2.8 EL and FTZ. it was comfortable weather in all the places i was shooting.

you can add a pad to any of the ones out there but the minute you pull it off axis your pad is going to move with it.

I've got a Magpul, still adjusting the strap some, using it with a Sony 200-600. I did order a Pro Tec Deluxe Neoprene Non-Slip Shoulder Strap Pad (Model SHPAD12) from Amazon. This can be loose, sort of letting the inner strap slide, but it usually slides some with the strap as noted above. I haven't found the magic strap yet, that pads well, stays in place for the pad, doesn't slip off the shoulder, but slides easily when bringing the camera up.

There are plenty of single point type slings out there. Not sure the GI QD is great, they work of course, plenty strong and allow swiveling.

My L bracket has a QD but so far just use the single point QD sling with the 200-600 and to the foot. The L bracket/camera have other attaching points and I use a Peak Design there. I don't like having to disconnect before going to the tripod, with either one. I may rig a loop with a QD to go to the strap lugs on the big lens. Still feel the PD's little loops don't look as strong as I'd like. I've seen some slings using "seat belt" webbing, it's soft and wide so while not padded, spreads the load well.

The PD straps are the least worst I've found. The 32mm wide "Slide Lite" is my preference as it is of uniform width and feel. Which PD strap did you try? There are larger and smaller ones. The original "Slide" is a uniform 45mm width but does have a short section of padding inside the webbing. I have one but never use it. Always feels too stiff at the padded section.

Most everything I carry goes on the PD "Slide Lite". I sometimes carry big lenses on magpul slings but frankly don't find them as comfortable as the PD without a jacket underneath.

I tried an upstrap and hated it because the "pad" is in a fix position which does not always land where I want it. Also way too grippy for me. I prefer the strap to easily slide over my clothes. The rubberized ones get stuck on my backpack straps.

Maybe you need to wear thicker clothing? I'll wear a fleece vest or second shirt as an extra layer of padding in all but the hottest weather.

Only other suggestion I would make is to look into shoulder holster type rigs like Cottoncarrier or Holdfast.
