Yes, I think top smartphones are in IQ comparable to an RX100.
I own a Pixel 6 and the IQ is exceptional, especially at night. I'd even say I take better low light pictures on the go with my pixel than with my A7c.
But the whole process and experience is imo terrible compared to a real camera. No EVF, no physical buttons, no floppy screen, no zoom, very little manual control. And most of the magic is done in AI to the jpeg, so taking a Raw picture doesn't make a lot of sense.

But the RX1 series does really have a place in my heart. Never used one but the idea of a Compact FF with my favourite focal length of 35mm and a fast f2 aperture really is appealing to me. But I really want an EVF and fast AF in such a camera, so the only one I'd want is the RX1Rii, but that's really expensive, even used...

Yes. I have the evf on the original and it’s ok, needs to be secured. Face af is fine for adults but not kids or pets. I added a 35 1.8 to my a7iv but I may rethink that as I can’t see letting the rx1 go anyway.

How’s the latest gr af? The street one with 40mm I’d prefer to the 28 I think.

As for the smartphone, for me the three lens setup changed a lot. The 70mm equivalent does pretty decent portraits.

I understand the desire to use a real camera, I just wonder whether if iq is what ultimately matters, then a larger sensor fixed focal compact would be less of a trade than a small sensor with zoom. Up to each I think!

The rx10 results I've seen look tremendous, assuming decent light, and I understand the new SteadyShot in the rx100 is much better than the m3 I have - but that wouldn't help me as I shoot a lot of people so the shutter still has to stay higher.

That is one of the reasons I sold my RX100 VII for my purpose and with the zooms in my S22 Ultra, I didnt see benefits from the Sony. Now the RX10 IV is a different story with its superior glass and reach.

I've had the V for years and was very happy with it as my back-country ski camera, shooting both stills and video. When I got an iPhone 14 I started bringing it instead as a snap-shooting walk around camera since I always have it with me and the results are as good or better for screen viewing with the computational capabilities. No comparison to my A7rII or V with good lenses of course.

I'm thinking of selling the RX100V and buying a used VII for an upcoming big ski trip. The 200mm equivalent zoom and improved video are the big selling points for me over just using my cell phone. It fits nicely in the pouch on the waistband of my ski pack.

Someone asked about age, implying that you must be ancient if you can't haul an A7c + a couple of primes. I'm 68 and try to keep up with my fit 40-50 yr. old back-country ski partners on 4-5K elevation gain days so weight is a prime concern. I also need easy access to minimize photo time since I'm normally "the" photographer and stop more than my partners for that, then have to catch up!

Yesterday, inspired by this discussion, I played with RX100VA raw files. I think that they are definitively different from pictures taken by my iPhone. Typically to all 1" cameras, RX100VA files are a little rough aven at base ISO, and the limit of dynamic range can somtimes be seen in noisy shaws and blown out cloud edges.

One could say that iPhone has better image quality. On the positive side RX100VA files are delightfully camera-like single exposures compared to the computational photography taking place in iPhone. The 12 bit raw gives moderate headroom for post processing inclyding very good looking bw conversions. In low light the differences in camera vs. smartphone technology are more obvious, even to the point that I consider RX100VA images not good enough.

There is something very fun in RX100VA pictures, main point being that they are taken with a camera, not a smartphone. Ergonomics and EVF are an added benefit.
