It is amazing!

As technology continues to march along these long focal length lenses, or whatever replaces them, will continue to get even lighter. The advent of electronic diaphragm connection, image stabilization, electronic shutter and optical advancements, just to name a few, has allowed these lenses to vibrate less, cancel out system movement/vibration shake and make them easier to hold and transport. I can't wait for Diffractive Optics to become more common. Who knows what the future holds for long distance image acquisition.

I dream of using such a lens for wildlife, outside sports, and astrophotography.

I do not own it.

Great for an interior architectural advertising photo shoot of all angles of view of the inside of an airport sleeping pod.

Would such a lens even be practical for sports with the tiny angle of view, large size, and need for support?

Not light - it's the crushing weight of debt that you'll feel.

It would have limited usage, I'm sure. But I can think of a few situations, most of them shooting from one end of a field to the other, or shooting from center field in baseball. etc. Would definitely need a monopod.

Yeah I guess if you knew where the action was going to happen and couldn't get any closer, it could work. You're going to need some very clear air though.

I would get one the day they get that 5-step heat shimmer compensation right.

You can buy a killer astrophoto rig with around the same focal length and better optics (For the purpose) for way less than $20k. Probably about $4-5k. But you'll also find you really dont need or want that long of a focal length for AP. A nice 400-500mm refractor can be had for about $1k, or a 102mm objective 700mm scope for $1-2k, and it will do much better than this canon.

You could also get the 800/6.3 PF Nikkor, which achieves 1120/9 with a 1.4x TC and is substantially lighter in weight even with the TC.

Depends on the sport. You could do fantastic things with the long throws in track and field as well as the first third of straight away races. It would also work really well for down field in games like Aussie Rules, which has a titanically massive pitch. There's also stuff like sailing, surfing, shooting the batter from the centre field fence in baseball. Probably not so great for shooting your six year old's t-ball games, though.

Heat shimmer is not an issue for tabloid publication. Grainy, low quality images are the norm. This lens with a 2x TC for 2400mm is PERFECT for getting photos of royals or other celebrities sunbathing topless in remote french villas. One such photo and the lens is paid for!

Luckily and apparently the tabloids have not discovered Photoshop then?
