If the quality is as good as recent G zooms (e.g. 16-35 F4 G PZ), that would make it very interesting landscape lens. It would pair well with 50-400, 70-200/4, 70-300 or even 100-400 lenses as two lens setup.

Might be a sensible option for some! Hopefully this won't be expensive.
I personally think there would be more demand for a 20-100 or 24-120. It's hard to see what the formula, size or features for this would be.

Could be what I've been waiting for, if they managed to make it small (i.e. smaller than a 28-70 F2.8).
The Tamron 20-40 is great, but lacks reach for general purpose photography (e.g. as a one-lens solution for travel). F2.8 vs F4 is not a big deal IMHO.

I kind of like the Tammy 20-40 still in testing but I love the idea of the focal length. I tend to like a 65/75 prime with it. I have shot a zillion events and that extra 4mm is really helpful sometimes in like trade shows and events like a car show and such so you can get the expanse of your shots and 30- 40mm is like perfect for small groups of people. But F4 is kinda slow in a lot of cases and even the Tammy 28-75 which I just got starting at 28mm on occasion is too long. Im still debating the 65/75 prime I have not bought it yet

But something like this maybe great for the walk around type lens.

This is probably more of an extension of the design language used on the Sony 28-60 we've seen with the A7C. I wouldn't be surprised if this was more of a compact design, with a PZ switch and optics that have to be corrected by software to look right.
I agree with you though; this could be a great lens as a walk-around, but F4 might be limiting there for me at least.

Agree Alan this maybe the 28-60 version with PZ that makes a lot of sense. Not for me per say and other advanced shooters but the bread and butter crowd this will work great for them

Wonder if it will be PZ like the 16-35 f4G. Not my choice, but might make sense. I'd prefer something like the Nikon 24-70F4Z.

I have been at 16mm way too often over the last month, pretty confident that for video shooting, having the lens start at 16mm or wider is preferable. It’s easy to go longer using clear image zoom

20-70 Sounds like a good lens for someone confident they don’t need wider than 20mm… or needs a one lens setup.

Since using and loving the PZ 16-35/4, I've been hoping for something like this, assuming it is similarly light weight ala the PZ 16-35. I feel that the zoom ring on this lens works fine for my purposes. If this type of construction (PZ) facilitates lighter weight on a 20-70, I'm all in.

Currently my preferred travel kit is the A7RIV, PZ 16-35, along with the FE 55. Crop mode with 26mp on the IV enhances focal range in a useful way.

I have no problem with constant f4. Sony, bring it on.

Hmmm, would rather see a high quality 28-55 2.8 after the advent of the Tammy 20-40 but this would be my second choice of zoom for Sony to release.

Dunno if I'll end up selling my 24-105. It's hands down the best landscape zoom I own, but towards the long end you need to get to f=5/5.6 to be anywhere close to usable. Also bigger than it needs to be.

Fairly interested.

Like it. One lens travel solution if it is around 500g. Id prefer a 20-50 or 20-60 f2.4 lens and trade more range at long end for speed.

The Tamron 20-40 is more appealing to me. I’d sacrifice some range for the extra stop. I find f4 indoors is too limiting and it’s quite easy to gain some reach by cropping in a pinch.

Sony's PZ lenses always start with SELP, but the rumored model number is SEL2070G. So I'm guessing this will not be a power zoom lens.

So it's target market isn't video. The only thing I can think of is that it will be very compact. That would be pretty nice.

I've been debating getting a 24-70 GM II for weeks now, but that weight keeps holding me back. A lighter but slower 20-70 G would be ideal for me, so I hope this is true!

I'm using the 24-70 2.8 Sigma but has the most awful zoom creep. I'd planned to upgrade to the Sony 24-70 GM II but this has me paused. I don't mind a slower lens and if they put similar quality into it (despite it "only" being a G lens) then this could be a winner. I'd find the extended reach down to 20 to be attractive too, but that's for my shooting preferences.

I’m guessing that moving the focal length to 20mm will mean this f4 lens will be similar in size to the 24-70GM II. Maybe slightly smaller. The only way to get even smaller is to make it variable aperture.
