p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sunset on the painted dunes and lava fields of Cinder Cone Volcano

Raced up Cinder Cone volcano in one of the toughest "in-a-hurry-to-catch-sunset" hikes you can possibly do, and was rewarded with a sweeping view of the painted dunes and, in particular, the expansive lava flow from more active days past. The dunes tend to get the love from this vantage point, but the size of the flow field really blew me away! Lassen NP is an incredible place and this is just a slice of it. Thanks for looking!

Nice shot Scott. Expansive view suits the location. I was there in April and it was great. The hike up the cone is no stroll in the park, that's for sure especially with a loaded up camera backpack!

Very nice Scott. I have to get up that way. I love these dunes and lava fields with that side light. Bob

The hike was brutal. Did it a few years ago at the peak of my fitness and cursed the whole way up. Sunset from the top was another level though!

A very nice image! I keep trying to figure out a good time to visit this National Park when the crowds are thin. It looks like it has a lot of potential for photography, along with Mt. Shasta. Thanks for sharing.

There was almost no one here in late July (several years ago however). The weather was nice and cool for being in the middle of the summer, some of the lakes were just thawing out and still half frozen over.

I like panos with so much detail you can take time to look around. Love the variety of colors in the image and the texture of that lava. Well done. I wonder if the bumps on the horizon are old cones?

Glad you liked it! I'm not sure about the bumps, but this is a cool fact about Lassen:

"All four types of volcanoes found in the entire world are represented in Lassen Volcanic National Park— shield (Prospect Peak), plug dome (Lassen Peak), Cinder Cone (Cinder Cone), and Composite (Brokeoff Volcano) volcanoes."
