I got my shims, but I'm not sure what I did last time I took apart my 35/1.5 because it appears to be no longer back-focusing 🤨

I have 4* 0.05mm and 4* 0.1mm precisely laser cut stainless steel shims. Cost me about $175 AUD and turns out I didn't have to spend it.

Let us know how it works! I recently found out that some lenses have shims in the front: https://www.yukosteel.com/2023/08/disassembly-voigtlander-50mm-f12-nokton.html

Dan

Because you over-tightened or under-tightened something?

There's only the 4 screws 🤔
I was thinking maybe I under-tightened it but there's no wiggle at all. Over-tightening (if possible) would increase back-focus issues.

Temperature change due to seasonal changes? I swear my 50 Lux ASPH's RF calibration drifts over the seasons...

Could absolutely be the case but it was back-focusing in summer and winter 😅
I'll keep an eye on it, I think perhaps I wiggled and rotated the shims and perhaps they are inconsistent enough that the thicker parts of them align now and the effective shimming is enough. It's really quite strange but this sort of thing happens a fair bit in my experience.

EDIT: still backfocusing in actual focus/recomposed photos. Must be my technique, it's very consistent though... maybe I'll shim the lens for my technique and then revert it if I sell.

EDIT 2: Added a 0.1mm shim, giving me a total shim height of 0.43mm. Seems to have solved my back-focus issues.

Interesting, short nose-picking series of images above!

The Voigtlšnder wins the price, size and bokeh battle, but I am surprised at how far ahead the Leica Summilux is centrally, both with sharpness and micro contrast. No contest - pity.

Doesn't necessarily make sense, given that the voigt is the same at f/2 and better at f2.8 onward until diffraction kicks in. I have a sneaking suspicion Fred's f/1.5 shot may have been mis-focused or his copy focuses past infinity like mine did.

Looking at all the 1.5/1.4 and 2.0 shots the most distant object in the scene ie. The antenna on the mountain and the edge of the mountain itself, the farthest visible tree etc looks the same or better on the Voigt to me, but the nearer parts of the infinity scene look way softer on the Voigt which indicates a potential focus discrepancy.

I may be wrong of course, it's just what I'm seeing.

I was looking at the shot of the blue car/car light, which even after Thrice has put it through post, the Lux still looks a lot sharper/clearer. Then again at all the tree shots from 2.5, 1.2, 1, and .7m where the Lux looks far sharper/clearer centrally, wide open. Then on the the cheruby fountain shot etc. in all the shots, from infinity to .7m, to my eyes, the lux, centrally, looks far sharper. Itís not even close.

I shoot wide open a great deal of the time at environmental portrait distance, and while f2 is sharper, and completely satisfying, I want f1.4 to be as close as possible. If I shoot landscapes Iím at f5.6/f8 where I see no difference with the CV, but that is much less interesting for me.

Hey different strokes for different folks. I may just be seeing something that's not there.

When I need ultimate fidelity I'm using my GFX.

When receiving the new Voigtlander 28mm f/1.5 Nokton for review, I immediately noticed its striking resemblance in both aesthetics and functionality to the 35/1.5 Nokton. While the latter is slightly shorter, the aperture and focus feel are remarkably similar. Also the Type I style for both lenses has the same matte finish and the aperture mechanism is identical.

The filter size is a step wider at 43mm compared to 39mm. I've posted some images here. (The new 28/1.5 uses the same hood as the 35/1.4 Nokton)
