p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The X-T5 / H2 continuous AF setup

After some 3k shots of the muts running around and some advice from a pro sports Fuji shooter friend, this is what works for me shooting the dogs running full speed.

Autofocus Continuous
Shutter priority 500th or 1000th
Auto ISO 6400

AF Mode - All
AF-C custom setting
Tracking sensitivity 4
Speed tracking 0
Zone area front

Pre AF OFF
Subject detection Animal
AF-C priority Focus

Button dial setting
Shutter AF-C OFF

With these settings AF On does the focusing and shutter button only takes the shot. This works with great results .

I will post some photos when I get home.

Not the best example , it's raining on and off so not the best light. Jpegs unprocessed with the 70-300

I will try tomorrow with a more demanding lens , but I have no doubt the AF will keep up.

Thanks for posting that. How do you find the 70-300 vs. the 100-400?

Seems like a nice portable solution but not if the IQ/AF dropoff is noticeable.

TIA!

This is my first time using it honestly , I also haven't used the 100-400 in a few years. I can give you a better assessment after using it for a few weeks. I chose it because of the lack of heft and weight, also i was able to purchase it used for about 565 ... so that helped my decision.

One question - you recommend AF Mode - All. When AF Mode is set to All, don't you have to use the rear command dial to cycle between single point, zone, and wide tracking? If yes, which of the three do you normally use? Also, do you use the 'animal subject tracking feature?

I noticed your ISO 6400 setting. I'd be a bit careful about that with Fujifilm cameras — with most cameras, actually. Unless you have no other choice, using a lower ISO is going to help control noise issues.

Using a lower ISO limit will risk reduced shutter speed - and dog blur

I have it set to all and animal tracking as well. Typically it's on wide tracking, sometimes zone.. it just depends. I also have the subject select in the Q menu so I can cycle between object type quickly. I wonder if that can be set to one of the dials , that would be ideal.

yeah 6400 isn't the greatest , it's really last resort. Most days I don't need to go that high , but on a dark day like these photos it may be needed.

Ah, OK. That makes sense. I was reading the post as recommending the use of 6400 in order to ensure AF accuracy... not just to deal with low light.

I rarely use 6400, even in low light, since it will require some significant work in post to get the image to where I want it to be. However, as you mention, sometimes it is necessary to use that ISO if the alternative is not getting the photo.

It really is scene dependent , when I'm out shooting street or shows, I will just change the shutter speed down to 1/30th rather than boost iso.
