Quick off-topic: Only Pentax can do better 40mm 2.8 => 52 grams. Covers Full Frame. Had it once, great lens.

However, since it demands auto focus you cannot (really) use it with a Sony.

I used that lens on E-mount. It doesn't cover full-frame well, but I had no problem focusing it. It is a simple unit focus lens with a direct manual helicoid. It is not too bad stopped down, but it is pretty poor overall compared to other lenses like the Canon EF 40mm F2.8 STM.

Interesting. When used on a Pentax full frame camera (K-1), it‘s fully usable as a full frame lens. A bit of vignetting.

I didn‘t know that it works with a Sony. incredibly light/small option then. It surely gets better when stopping down, however, I liked it for portraits wide open as well: https://www.flickr.com/groups/1945188@N23/pool/
I suppose in those samples it‘s mostly been in use on APS-C cameras. Would have to check the exifs.

I got very turned off by Zeiss and the 40mm Issues. Never had the heart to buy it as they really screwed that whole thing up. We have other options for sure now

Coincidentally, was this the last Zeiss lens for Sony? I'm wondering if this is part of why Zeiss hasn't released anything for Sony in a while. Closing down the aperture without informing the photographer usually isn't a good idea.

The Batis 40mm aperture debacle never bothered me. I very much understood why it could bother others, but it didn't bother me once I started using it. The images I took with it were just so vibrant and punchy right out of camera. Now that I'm migrating back into Sony land for my travel system, I can't decide between the Batis 40 and the new Sony G 40. Good to have options, like you said.

My Sony 40g was good but turns out the Tammy 20-40 and the Tammy 28-75 version 2 are better at 40mm on test. not as fast for sure but both good little zooms. Now my Sony 50g was really good. Should have kept that one. My 40 was slightly soft right side, I sent that one back

It's a shame size and weight precludes it from "greatness", but the resolving power of the Sigma 40/1.4 always blows me away.
