Why there is no a really great 40mm lens?

I always felt that 40mm is one of the most underrated focal lengths. When I looked at images I took with it they felt right.
Are there technical limitations to create a really great 40mm lens? Or producers prefer to play it safe and stick to more hyped up 35 and 50 mills?
I know, there is CV 1.2/40 (I even own one). I also still hold to my EF 2.8/40 (although I disposed of my Canon cameras more than 5 years ago).

Ever try the Batis 40mm É2?

The Batis 40 f2 CF is pretty darn good. Crazy sharp at f/4. No distortion. Linear AF motors. Near macro MFD.

Unfortunately, no. But still it is a kind of 3rd party lens. Majors seem to avoid investing in top 40mm glass for the reason I don't fully understand.

The 2.5/40G is a noticeably better than the Canon.

I don't adapt Canon to Sony - just keep it just in case.
I'm wondering, what stops majors to produce a top 40mm glass? Are they afraid to cannibalize 35 and 50mm or there are some technical reasons? Over decades, manufacturers produced f2.8 pancakes which makes me assume this should be one of the 'easiest' focal lengths out there as it is close to perfect diagonal.

Sigma makes a 40/1.4 in e-mount. I know 1.2kg is a lot to lug around, but I think it qualifies as as a truly great lens.

Sounds like a very niche product, this adapted DSRL Art lens. I'd expect something more compact and lightweight from a 40mm. I can carry both 35GM and 50GM and they will be almost same weight.
It has 16 elements which seems a lot compared to all those ~4 element pancake lenses - is it because Sigma still struggles to make this perfect 40mm lens or they don't really invest in R&D?

To sum up:
The 40/2.5 G is excellent and very small.
The Sigma 40/1.4 Art is excellent and gigantic.
The Batis 40/2 is excellent and almost macro.
The CV 40/1.2 is excellent and manual focus.
That's four excellent options.

Historically, 40mm has been a more common cinematic focal length. If you want really exception glass you can spend $20k a 40mm from ARRI or Cooke.

It's beacause it's the greatest 40mm out there, the sharpest and best corrected for aberrations. It only looses a bit in terms of bokeh to it's younger sibling, 35/1.2:

It's funny considering the title of this post, but Sigma 40/1.4 actually might be technically the greatest lens in FE lineup, it's just not optimized for mirrorless at all (size & weight - greatness comes at a price).

Thanks! But still all these have compromises and/or third-party lenses. I don't remember ultimate 40mm lenses from popular modern full-frame camera manufacturers. Where are those 'GM' or 'L' forties?

For some of those reasons it often sells new at a silly price. I got mine on an Adorama sale for $599.

Boy, you went from no 40's to it has to be a GM or L. Might have wanted to start with those qualifications.....

Other than size an weight, the Sigma 40mm is arguably at that level.

I think the days of a lens having to be a Sony, Canon, or Nikon, etc to be great are over...

I agree with others. 40mm might not be a GM type of focal length, but I'm very happy with my CV40 and Batis 40!

If it has to be a GM or L...then that throws out all MF lenses (which is a shame). The Batis to me is another example of a great 40mm in the vein of what the OP has limited this to.

I have a Sony 40G on the way. My kit has changed in almost a weeks time

If my PZ 16-35 sells . I will have on hand

A7IV plus a A1
Sony 20 1.8
Sony 40g Hope this thing is good. Have not read anything on this one, The 50 was killer sharp
Tammy 28-75 Version 2
Sony 70-200 Version 2

I may though get some type of super wide like a 12/15. But I want small may buy my 4th CV 15.

Why limit your lenses to Sony only lenses. One of the greatest attributes of the Sony system is the huge selection of great 3rd party lenses.

Yup, in my case the only regret I have over not liking Sony cameras is that I canít access the Loxia and Batis lenses.

There are so many interesting 40mm lenses for Sony. I love my Batis 40mm.
