on the Olympus 100-400 or 300f4 on an OM-1

Going to Bosque Del Apache and depending on what fields are flooded the birds can be far off.

Both teleconverters worked very well on those lenses with the E-M1x, so I imagine they would be even better on the OM-1 due to its slightly better AF.

I'm very happy with the 1.4x on the 300/4. Sharp and contrasty. I find some loss of quality with the 2x, but the main reason for not using it much is that it's hard for me to find the subject quickly. BIF is a fail with my skill and technique. The 1.4x is almost always on the lens, though. YMMV but I wouldn't hesitate to bring both. Doesn't seem to me to require a lot of thought, or to be much trouble to swap in the field.

At present I have my 1.4x mounted on my 100-400 and OM-1. I always thought that when I had my 1-2 that the combination was great other than the loss of ISO. Two days ago I left the 1.4 on the 100-400 and shot some mallards flying. The AF worked very well even though I was fully zoomed at 540mm. Previously I had thought it maybe wasn't as good as the 1-2. When I was photographing Grizzlies, the outer points wouldn't recognize the bears shape but the inner points would. Just my experience since I was shooting at F9 wide open at 540mm. Plus probably the light snowfall and grass blowing didn't help as I have already complained about in a previous post. I am sure with a 300 F4 lens wide open it should focus very well.

I use both teleconverters with my 300mm f4 ,in fact the 1.4 is usually attached to my lens.
Very pleased with my results with the 1.4 converter but have not had much luck with the 2.0 converter but living in the UK there is quite often a lack of light which probably explains why.

Ref ,using the EM-1 mk iii

I have used the MC-14 and MC-20 on my 300 f/4 on my E-M1x body with great success. I would rate the MC-14 with no loss of performance or sharpness on the 300mm and the MC-20 is good to excellent all depending on having good light.

Like others, I have used both the 1.4x and 2.0x on a 300Pro. There is a slight drop in sharpness with the 1.4x, but - for my personal taste - the 2.0x was not acceptable. IMO, if I need 1200mm FF equiv to fill the frame, I need to work on getting closer. At a certain point increasing FL and atmospheric interference just don't result in the kind of detail that I want. I think the 2.0x gets me close to that threshold. JMO.

I use/used the MC-14 with the 300Pro and now with the 150-400 F4.5Pro.. I see no af issues on the 300 but, a little bit of searching ( less accurate) on the EM1X.. just received my OM1 tonight.. so I can’t comment on that platform yet. I’m taking the OM 1 this weekend to merritt Island to test.

Great location! Remember to post some shots.

I'll be there in Dec.

Hey Tom, I'm there 12/30 to 1/1. You are there a few weeks earlier. Too bad.

Not sure how familiar you are with CR but the Osa Peninsula is one of the best birding locations. Honestly, there are many great locations in CR.

Just got the Oly 100-400mm lens. Did a comparison test shooting at a Siemens star target vs a 300mm pro lens. Added the MC-14 and the MC-20 to both for testing.

Results: The 300mm pro cropped yields slightly better resolution than the zoom at 400. Of course, the 300 is also f/4 vs the zoom at f/6.3 at 400. My copy of the MC-14 gives slightly better than cropped results for both lenses. My copy of the MC-20 gives slightly better results with the zoom, but noticeably better results with the 300mm. If there's enough light, I prefer to use the MC-20 on my 300mm. I'll save the MC-14 for use on the zoom from now on. Comparing the 300mm + MC-20 to the zoom + MC-14...No contest. The 300mm combo wins easily.

Thanks everyone for your information.

I am going to Bosque Del Apache with a 300F4/MC20 which either my wife or myself will use for extra reach (900mm FF equ). I also have a MC-14 which either of us can use on the 100-400 (1120 FF equ).

Based on everyone's advice I have declined purchasing a 2nd MC-14. Initially, when I purchased the 300f4, my wife had no interest in it. It is somewhat heavier than the 100-400 and the zoom is, of course, more flexible. My guess is that my wife will ultimately understand the value of the 300F4 and will want one, so I'll save my money for that.

Regards,
Tom

I have to admit for the type of shooting I do, I won't ever likely purchase the prime 300 f4 Pro nor the outrageously expensive 150-400 f4.5 Pro. The 100-400 works so gloriously for all I do. I never shoot in compromised light. So even with the 1.4x tc on it works superbly with no apparent loss of detail. The flexibility of the zoom isn't something I'll part with.
