p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fuji GF 35-70 @ 70mm MFD Test

There has been discussion here and other places about the Fuji GF 35-70's weak link being minimum focus distance at 70mm. BTW, this 70mm minimum focus provides a higher magnification than any other Fuji GF lens except the GF 120 macro. In testing my recently acquired on sale $499.95 copy I thought I would share my test photos of this particular setting for your information.

The photos below were processed in Adobe Camera Raw with the Abode Standard profile setting. All sliders were flat-unchanged. Sharpening and noise reduction were set at standard Adobe raw settings. The GFX 100S was tripod mounted and a 2 second self timer was used. IS was off, AF was on and the focus point was the 4 small black push buttons. I chose the best of two photos shot at each setting viewed at 102MP-200% on my Mac 5K monitor, there was extremely little variance between photos.

In viewing these uploaded files, which are very small as required by this site, I think you can immediately see the substantial jump in image quality from f/5.6 to f/8.0. In viewing the original 102MP files @ 200% the pixels polished up best at f/10. I'm good with that performance. That is what I have read that most (but not all) GF 35-70 lens owners have experienced.

Great results! Shooting at f/8 at 70mm at MFD isn't much of a penalty... DOF is so short at those settings that you'd generally want to do so anyway.

Congrats on the new lens, and congrats on getting a copy that seems to be pretty good!

Does this lens behave the same way at longer distances, or can it be used without having to stop it down for acceptable sharpness?

My copy was excellent when shot beyond MFD, at any focal length. Its corners got a bit sharper when stopped down, but I never felt like I needed to stop down to improve image quality.

Here's a few wide open shots. The wall is 66mm and the others are 35mm.

I also tested (same methodology) my 35-70 @ 35-45-63-70mm at a known landscape with varied targets about 75 feet in distance. Viewing at 200%-300% on my 27" 5K iMac my copy's best aperture was consistently f/8 to get the full field to have excellent resolution and contrast. But wide open was always excellent in the central area and the outer areas were still very good and I would use it wide open if needed.

For fun I also did a re-test of my GF 63/2.8 (which I highly regard) at the same time. At f/5.4 (wide open) the 35-70 @ 63mm matched the GF 63 at f/5.6 in the central area and at f/8 it was a draw across the field! Also, at f/10-11 diffraction effects were more apparent on the GF 63 and the 35-70 tested slightly better. I know Jim Kasson's test of the 35-70 was very good but I'm still very-very happy the 35-70 has tested out as well as it has for me.
