The reviews of this lens I've seen use canon's raw converter to eliminate the sever distortion at 14mm with the RF 14-35 f4L. What other processors have been updated to correct for this?

DXO PhotoLab and PureRaw support it.

out of curiosity - is there any "brick wall" shot publicly available as a CR3 raw file from said lens @ 14mm to see how bad DPP fares vs other contenders in geometry correction

I have no idea. DPP works great for what I am interested in, then output to TIFF. I do use Abode for certain finishing work in PS, but never for RAW files. Canon knows their lenses and cameras.

I was looking for CR3 raw, not for a somebody's ( dustin or bustin - does not matter) JPG and to use DPP, not ACR/LR

Yes Adobe. Lightroom has had a profile for at least a year.

1) CR3 raw files have full optics correction data embedded there - you can use Iridient C-Transformer to expose that to ACR/LR as DNG optics corrections tags and ACR/LR will use that

2) ACR/LR also have lens profiles ( https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html ) -> "Canon RF 14-35mm F4 L IS USM Canon RF 11.0/14.0" ... but optics correction embedded in CR3 is better ( IMHO ), but ACR/LR can't use that ( w/o help from software like Iridient C-Transformer )

Adobe supports it. DXO does a better job. That's why I send the photos (certainly the keepers) thru PureRaw and then the resulting DNGs into LR.

This lens looks bad ... I am not sure how good/ bad Nikon 14- 30 is but I remember reading about this lens on Ken Rockwell page ( sometimes I read many pages about a lens I want to buy - so his page is ok to get some information )

But he wrote "This is the world's best ultrawide zoom, unless you really, really need the f/2.8 aperture of the larger RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM."

...

But this distortion look really bad

In 2022, you need to evaluate a lens by its corrected result, not the uncorrected file. If you still think it looks really bad after correction, the RF 15-35 2.8 is excellent along with being 50% more expensive and twice as heavy.

My corrected 14-35 looks better than my corrected 15-35 at each aperture f4 or higher. I did this comparison just recently when packing for Antarctica. There's no point to look at an uncorrected photo, it's like people ("serious" people, anyway) don't look at an embedded thumbnail. You can't even say "JPG shooters" because they, too, are getting the image corrected. One actually has to go way out of one's way to get the uncorrected image from a 14-35 or 24-240 these days - which is fine because it's fundamentally irrelevant to what most people would consider a "final image."

I noticed when shooting R series cameras, LR automatically applies a profile to my lenses, both RF and EF. For DSLRs, I had to click the checkbox for the lens profile correction. I sometimes uncheck the profile and it is shocking at the high amount of light falloff and barreling present on lenses like the RF 24-105 4L and 18-150 STM. The RF 70-200 4L and RF 100 2.8L look good with the profile turned off.

Yes, it's the wide angle lenses that use software correction to keep the size and weight down. I have EF L lenses that need little correction and I have RF consumer lenses that rely on correction. Both perform their duties admirably.

This would upset me greatly if I shot brick walls for a living and was unable to apply software corrections.

well, indeed, "serious" people are actually using software like FastRawViewer (who indeed looks @ embedded thumbnail or use a NON RAW histogram ?) and, surprise, it simply shows uncorrected image

This is an intentional aspect of the lens design. It allows it to be smaller, faster, and less costly than an f/2.8 lens at this focal length would otherwise be.

When this lens is mounted on a camera, it is impossible to defeat the digital corrections. Newer RAW software also applies corrections automatically, so most users will never see this.

The optical performance of this lens, like several others in Canon's lineup, should only be evaluated *after* software corrections are applied.

My experience with both the 16 f/2.8 and the 24 f/1.8 is that Canon corrects to a smaller field of view compared to other software such as DXO PureRAW. So if reviewers are using third party software to evaluate the corner performance of these lenses, they may be judging a part of the image circle that Canon did not intend to be visible. Obviously, this can skew the evaluation.

The Nikon 14-30 isn't any better in the distortion department. Examples are easy to find, e.g.
