p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Worth buying Canon 100-400 II EF after owning Sigma 150-600 C ?

Hi all, I have a Sigma 150-600 C lens that I use often. I was considering the Canon 100-400 II for more light and faster focusing... if you've used both of these lenses, which one did you choose and why?

I have both and sold my sigma since a 1.4x on the 100-400 gave me very similar results. However I periodically regret selling the sigma because I could use a 1.4x as that as well for much more reach, at 840mm. I can use a 2x on my 100-400, but I feel the win at that point goes to the sigma.

I will likely pick up the 800 RF in the future, hopefully those results are better than the 100-400 + 2x.

Since you have an R5, it's a better upgrade to proceed directly to the RF 100-500.

I agree the RF would be a better for the RF since it's more 'native' (w/o adapter), but I don't think the price is worth it. RF 100-500 at $2500 vs. EF 100-400 II at $1200... I'd rather get the EF II and another lens, for the same price as the RF.

Which 800 RF do you mean? The f/11 ?

I never considered a tele on the Sigma 150-600. I think I'll try it out today. I expect horrible AF speed and big drop in sharpness.

I made the same assessment, and got the 100-400 II to go with my R6. I upgraded from the 100-400 v1 to get the faster frame rates the vII is capable of.

Curious, does your Sigma display any of the focus pulsing some of the youtube guys have shown? I'm not really up on what's going on there, maybe it was solved by firmware (lens via sigma dock or camera body). So I'm honestly just curious.

A TC on the 150-600 with a mirrorless works quite well at least the 1.4x. I had no issues with AF.

This is from my M50, Sigma 150-600, 1.4x

This is my 100-400II with 2x III on my R6, again no real issues with AF, it was a bit slower than normal.

Yes on the pulsing... but it doesn't happen every time. Maybe 10 - 20% of the time and also depending if I'm shooting head on or panning. I didn't realize that was a known issue. I don't have the dock so looks like another xmas present for me!

Nice shots - thank you for sharing! I also have an M50, but didn't consider using it for bird photography. I used to have a 7D Mark 2 and sold it... but I miss the 1.6 crop sometimes. How is the M50 as a birding camera?

The 100-400 II with 2x III looks pretty good! Was that at 400mm (2x = 800mm) ?

Did Sigma come up with a fix for the pulsing? I have not seen anything.

This is what I got from Duane Patton's video on Sigma 150-600 pulsing:

**Sigma AF Update - Refer to Community Post**
Simon Thibodeau has undertaken extensive testing with the R7 and 150-600C and has discovered some very important settings that will improve the lens on mirrorless bodies. I have summarised his points but have included his full post below.

1. Pulsing appears to disappear from 7m/22ft to infinity.
2. Use Moderate OIS - (You need the dock to change this) This increases keepers as the Standard and Dynamic OIS try to keep the viewfinder steady which appears to be causing soft shots in bursts as it is trying to reset the lens. You can use moderate whilst using a tripod or monopod.
3. In AF menu set accel/deccel to -2, Tracking sensitivity +2, Switching tracked Subject to 0.
4. Using the Sigma Dock set to slowest AF setting.

I don't have a dock but might help someone else out.

Yes that was 800mm for the duck shot, I also had a 7d2 for years and sold it once I got the M50. If you are a bird shooter, the M50 is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

I have a sigma dock I tried selling a long time ago, it’s handy for getting into the sigma lenses and changing various configurations. Good find!

I bought my 150-600C thinking I could avoid buying a 100-400L II...but I now have both. My usage on a crop body, I was finding that mostly I was using it in the 200-400 range, and too often found 150 just too narrow a view. So the added benefit of enhanced sharpness/AF of the 100-400II was a topping to my questionable personal justification

If I could have only one, I'd go with the 100-400II hands down.

I also have both lenses plus 1.4x TCs for each as well. The Canon 1.4x iii TC is the better combo in my opinion. The Sigma TC (recommended and compatible so say Sigma) and 150-600 C slower to focus and not as sharp as the Canon combo. If I were starting fresh (without either), I would definitely choose the Canon TC and lens for use with my R5.

I also have Canon MKIII TCs, and never mentioned the Sigma TC. Sigma in my reply = Sigma 150-600
