p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wildlife photography / Step up from Canon 6D to R5?

Hello .. My dad uses his trusty Canon 6D Mark 1 and the 100-400 USM to shoot animals in the wood, like deers, foxes and other ground-moving critters. His AF hit-rate is average, shots in the dark are quite grainy and after cropping there are not too many pixels left. Recently we talked about our cameras and he was quite impressed by the silent shooting capabilities of ny Sony A7 IV, also the fast start up time and the quality of the shots in low light… So we talked about an upgrade of his camera.

As a mirror less camera user I would recommend him something from the R-Line from Canon, though I lack some first hand experience. The R6 is nice, but has just 20-26 megapixels and does not have the upper LCD-screen that my dad is used to have… So there is the R5. 45 Megapixels should leave enough room for cropping, the LCD helps with the settings, silent shooting is possible. He could also continue using the 100-400 which he likes so much.

But there are some questions open:

How mature is the canon R5 in regards of freezing and responsiveness. I’ve read some reports that the camera froze and had to be restarted. Is that still the case or already fixed by firmware-updates?
As a DSLR-user, battery drain was not a problem. How many shots should he get with one battery on the R5 in average? He would make just photos, no video.
When attaching the 100-400 to the body via adapter.. can this connection be trusted hanging on a leash while walking in the woods?

I also thought about transitioning him to a Sony camera, but I think better staying with the used button-layout of Canon, so that he’d feel comfortable using it.

Oh i forgot, he uses also the TC 1,4x, so this would add up to the adapter-game.

I do not have freezing the last 100,000+ frames. The R5 firmware is definitely better than it was over 2 years ago at the start. I recently shot about 20K frames on a 500/4 IS II, 1.4x III TC, and RF-EF adapter on the R5. There were no lockups or other problems. Note that the IS will remain on until the camera sleeps. That happens with Nikon or Canon SLR lenses on MILS, but does not have a negative impact on anything. Buy the Canon RF-EF adapter and not one of the cheap, ill-fitting, sometimes ungrounded ones.

Ive only had a few freezes on my R5.

You shouldnt have any issues hanging a 100-400 off of it. I put on a 70-200 with adapter with the camera on a blackrapid sling no problem.

The AF hit rate should feel like magic on the R5 coming from a 6D and also the lowlight performance should be a nice suprise. The new AI denoise programs (topaz, dxo) also work very well with the R5.

It is not uncommon for people to report that the old EF lenses work even better on the mirrorless bodies.

I think it would be a great upgrade for a wildlife shooter.

Also look at the R7 if your dad likes wildlife. I have both R5 and R7. I like them both a lot. For wildlife, since getting the R7, have not used the R5 for wildlife. Also, less than 1/2 the price.

Thanks for your answers, that helped already..

But how about battery life? Will he have to carry many spare ones on a day trip?

Battery life depends on his shooting style; I'd suggest that he always carry 1 spare. My experience with the R5 is that for single shots I can consistently get several hundred images/charge. When I'm shooting short bursts (3-10 frames), that increases to about 1500-2000 shots. There are so many variables though, which is why always carrying at least one spare battery is essential. A big variable is how much EVF vs LCD use there is, which EVF mode is set, and which shutter mode. Also don't forget that batteries don't last has long in extreme cold.

It's not unusual to get 2500 to 3000 images on a battery when shooting heavily in good weather. However, the maximum speeds will drop when the battery is nearly depleted.

Battery life will be pathetic, compared to the 6d,so keep that in mind. Of course in almost every other aspect it will be a step up. Still think that the cheap 6d has one of the best image quality of all recent Canon's.

The early day R5 freeze issues are gone. As for battery life if you feel you really need to stretch the most out of it:

With a touch screen, and live menus in the EVF, the top LCD is not something I miss on the R6. The R6II was just announced, and is supposed to have better battery life. Not a step up MP wise from what he has, but surely to be a great performer. R6 is better noise wise at higher ISOs than R5, though the R5 is no slouch.

The EF TCs work fine with the Ef-RF adapter. I use one all the time. No worries on the adapter at all. It just plain works and ends up being functionally invisible.

Battery life is a drawback on the R5 and R6 vs. DSLRs. But there are some tricks you can do to increase it. Airplane mode, setting a button to switch between EVF and rear LCD, etc. You can find ideas by searching here. On my R6 I always have 2 spare batteries, but rarely need the second one.

I have 2 R5s. I had one freeze up with the first on early Firmware. Non since I updated to FW 1.5.2. When I go the second body, I immediately updated the firmware right out of the box and have never had a freeze.
I have dragged these cams all over Africa several times with no issues.
I don't know the number of shot I get on a battery, but it's easy to have a spare battery in a pocket. I generally spent 4 hrs in a jeep in freezing morning temps with both cams on and 4 hours in the afternoon on a second game drive. and occasionally needed the 2nd battery, but usually only on the main camera.
The R5 with a RF 100-500 is an exceptional wildlife camera. (I'm a heavy cropper)

I went from an 80D to an R5 and used the 100-400 IS II. What an upgrade... I think mine froze up one time and that was on an older firmware. He will absolutely love the 100-400 on the R5 and it will perform so much better with the teleconverter. It will likely be sharper since there's no need for microfocus adjustments and it focuses super fast with the teleconverter. I've never spent a full day shooting before but I know I have taken at least a thousand images (many in quick succession) on one battery. I actually don't think I have ever depleted a fully charged battery while shooting to be honest, but I always keep an extra in my pocket (and have used many times when I forgot to charge the other one). I do keep the camera off as much as possible...

Have you consider R6 Mark II? It has everything you are looking for and cheaper than R5 so you can buy a better RF lens should you upgrade.
