(Cross post from the Sony forum)

Well... what can I say? 600GM is everything people have said and more. It's a stunning chunk of glass that performs on another level.

I rented the lens for five days and wanted to cry when I mailed it back to LensRentals.com, btw, if you ever need to rent a lens, give LensRentals a try. Topnotch service!

The lens is very well balanced, and I shot a lot of the time hand-held. It feels lighter than my 200-600 even though it's 2lbs heavier. Autofocus --- BLAZING FAST. It locks on like nothing I've used before... amazing. I messed up plenty of shots, but I brought home images I would never have captured if I wasn't shooting the A1+600GM. One thing to keep in mind... the early morning temps are 28-32 and swing up to 55-60 in the late afternoon/evening. I lost a lot of shots due to heat distortion.

Another thing to keep in mind in the early morning... just freeze. I kept the windows down while rolling around the loops, this kept the camera/lens cold (ambient temperature) so I didn't have to worry about a huge temp swing from heating the inside of the truck and jumping out into 30 degree weather.

I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make the trip, we recently relocated and are in the middle of a full home renovation. There's a lot going on. Bosque has turned into an annual trip, and I struggled with making the decision to go. It was a quick trip, I rolled into the refuge around 3pm and hit the loops Friday afternoon and then made my way back to Arizona Sunday morning.

The flight deck area at the time I'm posting this was nearly empty, the pond to the south is empty as well. I believe they are going to fill it this month. The past couple of trips, the observation area when you first enter the refuge driving from Socorro south, it has been empty. They park worked on the levees and it has water in it. This is an excellent place to catch sunrise shots of the birds. You get great light and the big tree to the south of the pond is bright yellow with fall colors right now.

The far north loop inside the park has been opened in the past, it is closed. I was a little sad about this as I've come across harrier hawks and turkeys on the north end of the refuge.

The migration is really just starting, and the birds are not in thousands upon thousands. There is more than enough to keep you busy, plenty of opportunities to capture shots. The trees are in full fall colors adding to the scenes. I gave this time of year a try to see if I could avoid the crowds... it worked. There were maybe 20-25 cars throughout the entire day... very low volume.

If you haven't been to Bosque... put it on the list of places to see. I'm still working on tons of images... here are some I've worked on.

The antelope shots... a little backstory. I grew up in southern New Mexico very close to the border. On the way to school, often we would see antelope herds out in the desert. I haven’t been back to the area in 30 years, on the way back to Arizona I took a chance and traveled the route back home through this area. I was in luck and super excited to see the little group out in the desert. Sadly, the images are only web worthy as heat distortion really messed up the shots. It’s still great for the memories but I can’t print these.

Enough babble …it was a great trip… loved shooting the 600GM! I will own this lens…at some point… soon.
Hope you like the shots and let me know if you have any questions about Bosque…I think this was my 5th trip? I might go back in January.

Anyways… photo time… with many more to process.

Thanks for making it this far.

The eagle shots.. just for giggles and grins... I put on the 1.4x tc and didn't expect much as the distance was very far. I was away from the flight deck, down the road when I snapped these. I was shocked to see the details the 600GM +1.4xTC picked up. Usable photos... blew me away. The last shot is with the above combo but in crop mode... so... 1260mm equivalent? Again.. amazing lens... just amazing!

Ohhhhhh my I can feel your enthusiasm Hatch! That's awesome that you made the trip and that you adapted so quickly to a new lens. You have a lot going on but now your mind is refreshed and your are wound up and ready to finish the tasks at home ...........or cancel those and order the lens
Super sweet series, a multitude of wonderful images and hopefully more to come.
I was thinking about commenting on each one, instead I will just look at them over and over and over!
I'm glad it all came together for you, you are a great salesman as well

Thank you, Karl. I am very excited to have used the 600GM, it made the trip for sure. I agree...even if the trip was just for a few days, I'm recharged and ready to get back in the swing of things, it was a much needed break. Our contractor came over and said all the cabinets were in which is two months earlier than anticipated. A blessing and a curse lol now I have to get to work... this weekend.

Thanks again for the PM chats and for the comments here. Much appreciated.

They are interesting and super loud when they are in the hundreds/thousands... it was shocking the first time I experienced what around 1000 cranes sound like... crazy!

Thanks for the comments.

Thank you, Jason. If you get the chance... go The end of October through the end of January ... great time to be there. I think the Crane Festival kicks off the first week in December?

Thanks again.

Making a trip to Bosque del Apache on November 21. Are there big numbers of cranes and geese there? We have some cranes around west texas grazing in wheat fields but the numbers are not near as big as the playa lakes are all dry around here.

There are more geese there at the moment than cranes. That being said... by the time you get there the migration should be in full swing. Plenty of opportunities to capture some nice shots. As mentioned previously... the flight deck area has very little water in it. I think they are going to fill it soon.. not sure when. Best location in the morning IMO is the observation area when heading to the entrance... going south from Socorro... on the right. The afternoon/evening the flight deck is nice.

Hope this helps.

Wonderful set. I'm just a beginning birder, but you make me want to work hard at it this winter to get just a couple of shots close to the quality of these.

Oh no.. I missed this reply.

Well... if you read this while you are there or headed there

The first pond on your right when heading south from Socorro to the refuge is a great place to catch sunrise shots. I can't guarantee the cranes/geese with be there...but... there's a good chance. The warm glow of the rising sun really helps with the images. If the birds are not there and you are... it's still early enough to enter the refuge and head over to the Flight Deck. The main/large viewing pond often holds hundreds if not thousands of birds to photograph. The only downside (depends on your goals) is you are shooting into the sun. Silhouette shots are nice and as the sun rises you can still nail some nicely lit shots.

Hit all the roads... drive slower than the speed limit... I can't tell you how many times people have passed me...while missing out on some great wildlife sightings. Loop the roads several times...

Like most things... early morning or late evening is the best time for great light and bird activity. The refuge has a lot to offer... deer, javelina, I've been told elk but never come across them, all kinds of birds of prey, etc.

I've had the best luck for deer just outside the refuge on the way in ... again.. heading south. Several large mule deer bucks I've photographed in this area.

Lots of turkeys as well.

Lens choices...

Anything from 100mm to 600mm or more... all depends on the animals. There were times I shot over 1000mm but I would say a 100-400 or 200-500 / 200-600 will do very well for most situations.

Bring warm clothing...layers...the temp can swing 30 degrees quickly (maybe not as drastic in January) but it gets chilly photographing the cranes at waters edge. If you are bored, head over to my site... I think I have four posts about Bosque on there... so much to see and photograph.

If you are heading through Hatch NM, be sure to stop at Sparky's Burgers for an awesome green chile cheeseburger.

Thanks for the comments and have a fun trip.

Many thanks, Jim.

I'm still a rookie when it comes to birding, couldn't tell an "X" from an "X" lol but they are fun and challenging to photograph.

Glad you like the shots.

Enjoy the day.

The light on these birds is sublime...
You really had a successful trip... I love the cranes, but the 3 pronghorns and pair of bucks are truly excellent environmental/wildlife images.
