After a nine-month wait (NPS day one/hour one order), my new 400MM 2.8 TC arrived. I can't say enough about the performance of the optics. Senational .... but .... and there usually is a but ...

The tripod collar is incredibly loose. When I am shooting football, I need to realign about every set of downs. It drifts about 1/4-1/2 inch during pretty light duty on a monopod when tightened as hard as I can without using a tool (which I will not!) I thought I was the only person with this issue. A quick Google search and a B&H review assures me thay I am not.

Wondering if anyone here with this new cost-of-year-of-piublic-college-tuition lens is having the same issue and if you have found a solution.

I'll probably send it in for repair/service after the college football season if I can't find a solution. Decades with the of 400 2.8 and 600 f4s and no issues on this front ...

I’ve had my 400mm F2.8 TC since June and I’ve had zero issue with the tripod collar.

Thanks. I don't think this is a widespread issue by any means -- but I was able to find others with the same issue fairly easily so ... win some -- lose some ... it's headed back to Nikon in Melville.

None at all, I had that with my 500pf and eventually it didn't tighten at all which is when I sent it in!.No problems with the 400TC, knock on wood! I've had the lens since April when i first came out!

I have it for almost 9 months now and no problem with the collar so far.
Sorry to hear about your problem, must be very frustrating when a new equipment arrived
after a long wait to have some annoying problem. Hope you will get to enjoy your new lens soon.

This has been a reported issue, see this discussed over @ Steve Perry's BCG.

Over tightening is one possible reason why.
Nonetheless, I'll be checking my Z400TC as soon as I take delivery by the end of this week.

Not a 400 f2.8S, but had the same issue with my 500PF. I put up w/ it for a few months, but eventually sent it in for service. The repair was quick but I was annoyed that a $3600 lens would have a QC issue like this. Your frustration is justified... Nikon has had issues w/ poor collar designs in the past, but not w their top tier products.

My long awaited Z400TC arrived this afternoon, very excited!

However sadly, this lens has also suffered the same locking nut issue and will not tighten down sufficiently to completely lock the tripod collar ring, this was the first thing I checked

upon opening the box and unwrapping the lens, even doing a video to show Nikon the fault straight out of the box.

This is such a poor quality control issue for a company product of high value made IN JAPAN, it seems this has effected the latest batch of Z400TC's.

I have 2 trips to the Serengeti, the first in less than 2 weeks and the next early FEB, so for these 2 trips it won't really be an issue granted I'm not shooting from a tripod.

But will advise Nikon Australia tomorrow to let them know of this issue.

Just got my copy in and sad to report I have this issue as well. Very disappointing. For those that have contacted Nikon about it do they require you to send the lens in or what do they do? Not to keen on sending in my brand new lens. Ugh.

My 500 PF had drift when I first got it way back when it was first released. In fact, I had my 500 PF a week or so before it was supposed to be released.

If I recall correctly, there was a delay or recall or something at the time and I wonder if this was the issue. Anyway, I ended up fixing mine myself by getting a replacement part from Nikon.

Found a post on I posted on DPR about the issue of the knob. It looks as though I didn't use a home made remedy but got a replacement part that was a new design compared to the original one that came with the lens. This makes me think that this was the reason for the delay in the 500 PF release:

"I went to Nikon and ordered the replacement parts and received them within a week and I fixed it myself! All good now and that was quite a while ago now. I think the issue is with a small nylon pad that is on the end of the knob and the pad is what causes friction to the barrel when you tighten the knob. I think the original nylon pad was too small to cause enough friction to stop the collar from turning, but the new knob has a larger (thicker and bigger in circumference) nylon pad and thus grips better. At least, that is how it was with my replacement compared to the original."

I received my 400mm 2.8TC on Sunday 11/6 and luckily my copy doesn’t exhibit any tripod collar drift. I know another local photographer who also received his copy last week Friday and his had no problems either. Maybe it’s because I live in Japan, but it seems the latest batch here wasn’t affected.

I finally got word that mine is ready to ship, but this collar issue has me worried still because I so often use these lenses sideways on the wimberley mh100 monopod mount. Is this an issue that has been fixed by Nikon on the latest shipping lenses? Or has anyone who got theirs more recently also experience it?
