p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Croda de Lago - Dolomites - Italy

Just back from Italy where I convinced my wife to spend some time in a hotel/spa while I hiked in the dark, in the Dolomites. I found a trail description to a reflection of Larch trees in the fall. There is nothing like hiking up a steep slope for 2 hours before the sun rises where you have never been and examining signs and trying to figure out where you are and just pushing on.

The Larch in Italy are a month behind larch in Alberta, Canada. And it is much more civilized to not have to worry about Grizzlies in the bush.

Here are my best of the morning.

Comments and feedback are appreciated.

[I will mention that I have been experimenting with lighter lens in order to keep the weight down. These were with RF24-105 4-7.1. I think the iq is fine but at certain mm I had unusual colours (not flare but a purple area). I found afterward that I had my hood on wrong, but I suspect some lens issue that only shows up at particular mm angles but I have not seen it on my L lens.]

What a view, Scott! I would say the early morning stress of hiking an unknown trail paid off! Excellent images throughout! Amazing how still the water was. Beautiful reflections and awesome light!

Starfire8: It is a fantastic view. Glad you like the images. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

junglialoh: Glad you like the reflection. It is a beautiful place. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

Jim Dockery:

As I walked up the hill in the dark seeing headlamps way above me in the dark and huffing and puffing, I wondered whether I would make it by sunrise or whether the weather would cooperate, or whether it worth it. I love the Dolomites too, especially after I realized last year I could add a month to the fall (colour ends in Alberta early Oct, but ends at early November in Dolomites. The downsides of Dolomites even at 7am and 2 hour hike is that there were almost a dozen (much younger) people there with me and 1/2 of them were flying drones and not being particularly courteous (getting in the way of majority).

So I am glad you think it worthwhile. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

I like the second the most. It has enough foreground for the viewer to feel like staying on lake's shore (or in very shallow waters) rather than in the middle of the lake. I also think that the picture would be more balanced if the peak was more centered vertically in the frame. To my eye, that dark piece of land to the left does not add anything to the scene and looks rather distractive.

not surprisingly, these are GREAT SCOTT!
Glad you are away from the bears for a bit.
How do you like the R5?

Looking at the color, the second one for me.
Looking at the composition and the overall light, I prefer the third.
Probably if you open a little bit the color in the larch on the right, to match the lightness and tone of the second photo you will get a much better image.

Unfortunately this year the high temperatures didn’t allow a good foliage here in Italy.
Knowing the situation, kudos, Scott!
Getting such a beautiful set was not a peanut, at all.

Next time, hike in the day and sleep at the hut nearby the lake!

No grizzlies lurking about? Take all the fun out of exploring.
Wonderful photos.

Excellent images.
I am curious about the last pic - it shows some pretty severe banding above the trees.
Did you have to push it post, is it a camera/lens issue, conversion artifact, or ... ?
I've heard how good the R5 is so I'm surprised to see banding which is usually when you "run out of bits".

Scott

I did the same hike with the same intent last week (Sunday Oct 30th). Got to the trailhead and started at 6.18 with a sunrise around 7.43. Was quite surprised how light it got quickly and didn't need headlamps. Got to the downhill section heading to the lake and couldn't work out how the sun had obviously risen already. Then I realized. Sat night the clocks changed and sunrise was at now 6.43!!!!!!

Anyway it is a beautiful view and location and hike. All 1350ft total elevation gain.

#1 for me as its the classic view and the light on the Larches is beautiful.

cheers
Wembley

Scott, what light you got on those Larches! Each and every image is superb with beautiful light. Larches first light shot is my pick. Nice work

SergeyT: Glad you like the 2nd. Thanks for the detailed suggestions on 2. I will take another look at processing. Much appreciated. Scott

sbeme: The bears are going for hibernation. Glad you like Crodo de Lago. I do like the R5. It is the best multipurpose camera I have had. I liked my 5dsr better for landscape (more features, uses EF natively, no aa filter and a bit more mpx) but I love the weight of the R5 and it great for wildlife. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

dakel: Glad you like 1. It is an incredible place. I can see if becoming very good for me, if I make it past the grizzlies to be older. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

LeoPizzo: Glad you like the 2nd. Italy is so much easier because I don't have to worry about bears behind each tree. I will look to the Refugio next time. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

dgdg: The lack of worry about grizzlies makes it so different. I don't even worry as I walk through the bush. Glad you like the photos. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

BubbaJon: The last image was banding is not the R5, its my processing. I really should have done a better job or not put it in. It was very dark. Glad you like the images. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

wembley: The old time change challenge. surprise I just looked at your pictures - it is a great spot and you found some good locations. Glad you like the colours in 1. Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott

mike reid: Glad you like them all. It was a great morning. I got back to hotel by 10:30 and drove to Venice. I agree that Larch are wonderful and the Dolomites have wonderful larch. Thanks for the feedback Much appreciated. Scott

keepclicking: Glad you like 1. It was a tough walk in the dark. I recommend trying Dolomites. Thanks fr the feedback. Much appreciated. Scott
