p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Football 2 camera technique question

I shoot solo with 300/2.8 as my main and 70-200 on shoulder strap. I have full field access.

Question...if you are shooting a play say 40+ yards out and it's a breakway play and comes to you are you quickly swapping to the 70-200 mid play and risk losing the shot for better focal length OR continue with 300 and have cropped limbs? Swapping setup mid play and still be able to compose the shot on a running player is extremely difficult. You have to put down your long lens which is on a monopod onto the ground and grab your 2nd setup and still find the ball and compose?

Assuming you stay with the same camera setup for the completion of each play and only swap to 70-200 if you are say in endzone and they line up on anything within the 20?

If you do swap mid play how are you carrying the second body to be able to switch so fast? SpiderPro?

I have a second body on a slider over the shoulder strap by Black Rapid for my 70-200 and second body.

Most of the time for football I do not use a monopod with a 300, so I just let it down and swap it with the other camera and 70-200. For the times I do use a monopod, I don't bother putting it down, just hold it in the crook of my left arm and bring up the second body and lens with the right hand.

Impressive if you are hand holding a 300/2.8. What are you using to carry the 70-200 setup?

Typically, I don't switch mid play but it is something that I feel I need to get better at doing.

A 300 is too short for football, IMHO. A 400 + 70-200 or a 300 + 28-70 F2. That seems like a vastly better combo.

I use a 400 and a monopod and 70-200 on a black rapi strap. I am usually always kneeling so it’s rather quick and easy to rotate my 400/mono over my left shoulder and bright my 70-200 to my face and shoot . I do this mid play only when I have to, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
