Problem with 100-400?

I took delivery today of my OM-1, 12-100 and 100-400. There is a noticeable, rotation "wobble" at the attachment of the 100-400 to the OM-1 body. I'd estimate 1/16" perhaps a bit more. It is rated as LN by MPB. Is that a normal characteristic of that lens? There is no such movement with the 12-100. Thoughts?

I have 3 OM-1 and 3 100-400. My answer is a very slight wobble probably not 1/16 on all.

Mine in particular has virtually NO play in it. The ONLY combo I've run into with any (and it's very very tiny) play is when using the 1.4x TC on the end of the 100-400. It's barely noticed unless I actually try to play with it. But nothing to even note really. Hard to imagine the 100-400 on your OM-1 having any real play let alone 1/16".

That doesn't sound good. The one I had exhibited no play on any of my m4/3 bodies - Olympus or Panasonic.

I just purchased a used 100-400mm. It has a slight lens mount shift. I posted elsewhere and several people say they have experienced the same thing without any problems. I am inclined to keep the lens.

Agreed, more than likely 1/32” , but who’s counting. There’s a series of videos on DPR showing one person’s “slop” that appears far more than mine. While I’m nitpicking, I was clearly spoiled by how smooth the Canon 100-400 zoom ring operated. Not so much for the Oly 100-400. It feels rough. I cannot zoom with a continuous rotational motion, and when I do, the lens exhibits the “slop.” I’m likely missing a tension setting for zoom extension, but I’ve looked and find only the extension distance limiter switch. Even so if I did, it’s going back any way for a lens rated LN. First time for MPB.

No hassle, muss, fuss, or bother from MPB. I sure as hell hope the second copy works as it should.

I have several Olympus bodies and the 100-400 has the same rotational play on all of them, none of my other lenses have any at all. My guess is that the play is related to the O-ring for weather sealing (it's the only weather sealed lens I have) and it makes me wonder how weather sealed the lens/camera joint really is -- but I haven't used the lens in the rain and don't plan to. The rotation seems to be a common, but not universal, situation with these lenses but I've not seen anything indicating it's actually a problem.

I believe that lens is made by Sigma and re-badged for Olympus. Optically it's great, but maybe it's assembled with slightly looser tolerances.

I have owned 3 copies of the Oly 100-400 and none of them had any rotation "wobble".

You have a defective copy.

I agree, a defective copy, especially when associated with the lousy zoom extension being sufficiently tight so that it exacerbates the slop at the mount. I should have a replacement by 2 Nov.

I had rotation play with my Sony lenses (24-105 and 200-600, and before of those, with 100-400 and 24-70 GM). I don't remember if my Oly 100-400 had it too, I sold it for 300 pro. But I can confirm the stiffest zoom ring ever, no way to use that lens to record wildlife videos. So annoying. (and not that sharp but I suspect EM1x was the most culprit of imprecise autofocus).

Olympus 100-400 zoom ring works well. One of the three I have was a bit stiff at first but loosened up nicely after a bit of use.

FWIW, I took delivery today of a BNIB 100-400/5-6.3, having finally gotten completed the return to MPB of the one I had gotten from them. There is minuscule wobble at the lens/camera body junction. It is not amplified by rotating the lens extension ring. While the rotation is not Zeiss Otus like, it is nonetheless smooth. I am absolutely unimpressed with the image quality from it, especially beyond 200mm. I'll post later tonight or tomorrow AM some pictures of the "junk" I got for any of ya'll who would care to comment. Those of you have dumped OLY may have something to add to my thread here, perhaps you know what I'm talking about. Those of you have stayed w/Oly, I'd be grateful for your commentary. At the outset, it may well be my incompetence with the lens. I got 30 days I can return it.

There must be a lot of sample variation, because the 100-400 I had was very sharp, even at the long end, and even with the 1.4x and 2x extenders attached.

No one to blame but myself. After sorting through some photos from this afternoon, and, while continuing to learn ON1, I did a bunch of post-processing of The Iroquois. I think the software does a pretty good job, rescuing me from my ineptitude w/ the lens/camera. White areas are highlights from heavy sunlight.
