Being head of M division I imagine he has pull. Appalling service time was one of my complaints. I used the phrase “worst in the industry”.

Now that buyers such as yourself have made Leica aware of the initial issues with the SR reissue, I'd be inclined to get one with a newer production date over an old v2 lotto. But I'm waiting to see what their solution is for the new hood. Do they just make it thinner and still leave the lens threading to be random?

Leica is taking their sweet time on this new hood design...

An email has just been sent by me to request an update on the redesigned hood from them. Let's hope for some positive news.

They apparently had difficulty making a small flat piece of metal not scratch film, so don't hold your breath..

It seems like Leica has started shipping the redesigned hood for the Leica 35mm f/1.4 Steel Rim, which addresses the issue of hard vignetting when the hood is used with a filter.

@yukosteel's MOD article has been released, which enables the reissued Leica Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 Steel Rim to have a closer focusing distance of around 0.76m.

The Leica Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 Steel Rim reissue (11301) lens has a minimal focus distance (MFD) of 3ft or ~0.9m. This article discusses an experimental modification of the lens focusing mechanics to increase the closer focusing range to approximately 0.76m.
The modification requires precise and accurate grinding of five separate parts, including the MFD focus stopping bar of the outer RF helicoid ring and the elevated area of the inner RF helicoid ring. The modification can be completed by anyone who only needs the lens to focus closer while using Live View or adapting it to another mirrorless system camera.

However, if the lens is to be used with a Leica M rangefinder patch at closer focus, the lens RF couple cylinder must also be modified.

I've just read this entire thread, and have a question going back to the comparisons between the new Summilux 1.4 SR and the Nokton 1.4 Classic II.

From what I saw, the discussion was looking at images taken with the multicoated version of the Nokton and saying that it was a somewhat comparable lens to the the new SR, aside from not exhibiting the glow on highlights and that it lacked the SR's sharpness in some areas of the frame.

Wondering if anyone has (or would care to) compare the single coated (SC) version of the Nokton. Specifically, I'm interested in whether it emulates the glow of the SR or not. Thanks!

The SR is not sharper than the Nokton at center and mid-field but the corners do get slightly crispier when stopped down to f/4 and smaller apertures.

Both the CV 35/1.4 SC and the reissued Leica 35/1.4 SR have a comparable optical design, resulting in similar overall rendering. The only notable difference is that the Voigtlander produces slightly more rounded specular highlights towards the corners, while both lenses exhibit similar contrast. Both lenses also generate glow in highlight areas, but the Leica SR or previous 35/1.4 "pre-apsh" is more pronounced in this regard when used wide open, due to higher coma and spherical aberration.

Here are some rendering comparisons between the two lenses:

Fred, thank you for kindly linking those images and refraining from saying I'VE ALREADY DONE THIS, YOU FOOL!
Haha - I saw those comparisons but for whatever reason thought they were comparing the multi-coated version with the SR.
If I had to criticise the SC Voigt vs the SR I'd say that its bokeh balls feel sharper. As in, there's a tiny bit more local contrast within each ball. As a result the Nokton's out of focus areas seem a tiny bit more agitated/confused, whereas the Summilux feels a bit calmer.

It's really splitting hairs though. What an outstanding lens for the money. A "mockton" of the Leica glass.... anyone?

With them being so similar I think I'm going to spring for the Voigtlander, if only for the extra 30cm of MFD it offers. Shame, I was *this* close to buying my first Leica lens. They're both beautifully rendering bits of kit.

Thanks again, Fred.

You are welcome!
I agree with your observation regarding the Leica having slightly lower contrast in the out-of-focus (OOF) areas, likely due to it being less corrected for spherical aberration (SA). However, this disparity is hardly noticeable in actual images and only evident in direct comparisons like this. While many may prefer the more rounded specular highlights produced by the Voigtlander, it's worth noting that the Leica has slightly higher vignetting but lower distortion. When deciding between the two lenses, I highly recommend considering the CV 35/1.4 Nokton SC for the price alone. However, choosing between them can be a challenging decision, as it was for me, and I ultimately ended up with both. With my SR version now able to focus down to 0.76m, I have yet another reason to use the Leica more frequently.

Ha, but Yukosteel also modded the Nokton to 0.62 MFD, so the race is still on!

I actually quite like vignetting, and don't care much about distortion unless it's really egregious. I don't need architectural accuracy or anything.

To be honest I prefer the slightly lower contrast of the Leica, too, but it really is so slight...

MUST. STOP. DELIBERATING... Ah, whatever I choose I'm sure I'll be very happy.

While it is undoubtedly impressive that the Voigtlander 35/1.4 Nokton can focus even closer, I personally would not make that modification. I prefer having the 0.7m RF coupling and being aware that the minimum focus distance hard stop corresponds to the limit of the rangefinder. Unless there is some kind of marking or indentation in the focus ring rotation that signals when the limit has been reached.

Unfortunately, the new hood is still under development and won't be available for "a few months," as I was informed this morning.

Finally got my copy today, assembly date of 4/24 just 18 days ago.

Lens is very particular about flange distance being correct when adapted to my SL2-S or else it will have focus shift. I switched from my macro adapter to my M-Adapter-L and zero focus shift. I'll have to go back and re-adjust the macro adapter's infinity hard stop.

Aperture ring is not loose – just the slightest bit of play as designed. Aperture clicks are stiff and decisive.

Focusing out of the box is stiff. Same thing with my 28 Cron that has since smoothed out. Already seen some improvement by holding the lens facing downward and racking focus over and over. Still a bit jerky for making fine focusing adjustments.

Glow is gorgeous and ethereal at f/1.4. I have to say the reissue SR glow is much nicer (stronger without losing its appeal) than the glow from my pre-ASPH v2. I'm quite surprised, though, that it's just as sharp as my pre-ASPH v2 was at f/1.4. Could not be happier about this. Also very cool: I can use the aperture ring between f/1.4 and the f/1.7 half stop as a direct adjustment for the strength of the glow. If f/1.4 is too much, holding it right between the f/1.4 and f/1.7 gives the same glow as my pre-ASPH v2 did. The SR reissue glow is gone by f/2 like the pre-ASPH v2.

I really wish Leica had engineered a way to mechanically adjust the infinity lock itself into an "off" position, so that it could function as either an infinity lock or as non-infinity lock. Infinity lock is a bit annoying when adapting these lenses to other platforms, since infinity is not exactly at the lock position. Although I was glad to discover that this infinity lock design is not under tension when positioned right before infinity like the infinity lock of the 28 Summaron and CV 40 2.8 is. That tension is problematic on those two other named lenses, because you can't let go of the focusing tab when the infinity lock is partially engaged without the focus moving one direction or the other by itself.

Filter and hood situation: I knew what this was going in from everyone's reports, but I had to laugh when I'm looking at all the goodies knowing neither of the hoods nor the lens cap works correctly with a filter. Of all three of these screw-ups, I think the one that is most glaring to me is that they did not at least include their E46 lens cap. Even better would have been to have provided a metal lens cap like the one on the 50 Lux Black Chrome that would attach over a filter. Pure insanity. Everyone who tested these prototypes should be put in stocks in the Wetzlar town square. But I'm guessing the prototypes didn't include the hoods, they were just designed and tossed in the boxes after the fact.

MFD is shorter than the advertised 1m. Looks like ~0.88m using the foot markings in red as a guide (focusing stops just a bit closer than the 3' marking at ~2.9').

Fred, thanks for the encouragement to get this lens despite the hood/filter situation. For now, I'm just going to use it without a filter and get over the OCD of needing one. I've been doing that for the last week with the CV 40 2.8, and it's been liberating

Hey, congrats on the new lens! I'm really glad you managed to get a good copy.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of less than 1 meter, specifically around 0.9 meters based on my calculations.

For me, currently I actually don't use any hood with this lens, which makes it a super compact combo with the M. However, I do have a super thin UV filter attached, and it's great because it still allows me to attach the included lens cap. You're absolutely right, though. The cap doesn't work with any other thin filter that I've tried.

By the way, here's the filter I use:

Great solution with that thin filter. Is that the same filter solution you found for your 50 Lux BC but in 46mm?

I think I'm going to use a normal filter and just get an E46 Leica snap-on. Still thinking about which way to go...

Just came across this thread: pure gold from Fred as usual. I'm not in the market for this reissue since my 'cron v3, v4 and Summaron 35/2.8 are more than satisfactory. I am, however, super impressed that Leica Camera AG in 2023 is willing (and able) to manufacture an M lens with infinity lock. Also impressive is the proper and usable DOF scale. Also, that the focus helical seems to have the classic pitch, meaning that the focus throw is long like we're back in the 1960s again. The modern lenses from Leica and V/C are just so short throw that I can't stand to look at them, let alone buy them.

The final step to achieving retro nirvana is reverting the font to the original. I never liked that angular font that suddenly appeared in the mid-1980s. Yeah, yeah, first-world problems!

I got back into Leica in 2013 after having sold my M6s and lenses 10 years before when I went digital. At the time I stumbled across Ken Rockwell. Say what you will, but there is great info on his site that came about around the time of the M9 and the alt lens craze. One morsel is that a $7 slip on plastic Kyser cap in 40mm will fit over most 39mm filters and a 49mm will fit a 46mm filter. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=39mm%20Kyser%20cap&sts=ma
B&H has these in a variety of sizes. I’m forever indebted to Ken for this as I hate pinch caps with a passion.
