p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · A Nickerson Beach Assortment

This set is from two weeks ago on my last visit to Nickerson Beach, Long Island, NY. The terns and black skimmers have gone south with the American Oystercatcher the remaining summer bird and they have probably gone south or will do so soon. I'm looking forward to the winter visitors.

Comments and suggestions welcome,

Morris

Yes lovely shot of the ring-billed! But a great grab from the air on the Merlin as well. Did the birds scatter so you knew some raptor was incoming? Oyster Catcher must be on probation, wearing two ankle bracelets Always fun a the beach, Nickerson is good to you buddy

First one is my favorite. Love the bright orange beak against the white snow background!

Thank you Karl,
The sanderlings headed east when the merlin came in. The gulls and oystercatchers did not react. If you think that oystercatcher has a lot of bling, I've seen black skimmers with 3 bands and a radio back pack.

Thank you Saeva,
That is one of the reasons I love to photograph the oystercatchers. They are also very interesting birds that get to know the frequent human visitors.

Nice shots.

Over the weekend, I saw a huge flock of Oystercatchers about 6 miles East down the beach (on the bay side) from your photo and I noticed many of them had the same looks like some king of orange tag on their leg that yours has (photo 1). Do you know what this is about?

Thank you,

The orange tags are placed used by biologists from one of the local universities. I think it is Stonybrook yet not positive. There are at least 3 universities that study the nesting colonies at Nickerson Beach.
