p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Topaz Photo AI

I have to say I'm impressed. I have DeNoise and Sharpen AI. I really didn't want Gigapixel but Topaz offered it to me for $80 and then I'd get Photo AI for free. Topaz even says the 3 separate apps are better used individually with the intent to make Photo AI as good one day. Sharpen AI was good for a year but DeNoise renewal was coming up this December and now it's good for a year as well. I also use PureRaw for tougher NR jobs.

This was all on Autopilot and subject detection was on Auto. I just got to this model airplane show and it was on it's last minute in the air. Slow shutter speed and I'm a little shaky even with IS/IBIS. A lot of others I just culled out because I had enough in focus files. Sure is handy in a pinch.

Glad I got it when it was on sale. I was hoping for LrC 12 to introduce NR AI. NR Sensei has a nice ring to it. I wasn't holding my breath either. I know the PS NR Neural filter is being beta tested. It is still on the wait list in version 24 but looks PS specific. Maybe we will see something soon and for LrC.

V 1.0.6 just came out. That is 2 updates in two weeks. Working the bugs out. I thought 1.0.5 was faster and this version fixed some memory leaks.

I was just blown away. I could drag a RAW from LrC to one of the original apps, DeNoise, AI Sharpen or Gigapixel. This way I could edit as a RAW file. After Saving back in LrC I'd have to open the Library, find the folder, right click and Synchronize the folder so the file would show up beside the original. A bit of a pain but my main complaint was that it came back to LrC the profile said Color and I lost access to my other profiles. I resorted to picking a profile, doing some basic editing and then using the Edit a copy with LR adjustments command. I work with it as a TIFF.

Actually Topaz had a video explaining this but it never worked for Canon when it came to accessing the colour profiles. At the of the video they only showed a Sony example that had all the profiles.

Photo AI comes as a plug-in or you can use the Edit a copy with LR adjustments command. I tried the plug-in and it opened as a RAW. When I saved it look at what happened in LrC. Profiles and lens corrections are there. It's been a long times since I said wow to anything. That was what DXO PureRaw does and it was one reason why I liked it. This is a game changer.

Instructions via the app

The plug-in that supports RAW editing is accessible from the File > Plug-in Extras > Process in Topaz Photo AI menu and will send any image directly to Topaz Photo AI, then import the processed image back into Lightroom Classic. We highly recommend using this workflow with your RAW files for the best image quality results

I already new this but just in case. I contacted Topaz support and because it is a RAW file it will not carry any LrC edits over when it goes to Topaz. It does come back as Adobe Standard and the Detail panel has sharpening at 40 which is the Adobe Default.

I mentioned on the Topaz forums that Adobe's new default is Adobe Color and if that may up corrected in some future update.

Not sure if anyone is interested. There was a comparison and DeNoise results were washed out.

Here you can see the size of the original file.

The person supplied the incorrect RAW file further up the thread and then supplied it hear.

I have to say Photo AI surprised me. I keep reading about how bad it is compared to the stand alone apps. They do have more adjustments so you can do more.

My file is the second one down. This is what I got with Photo AI opened from LrC as a plug-in and edited as RAW. Back in LrC I left sharpening at the default of 40 and exported at screen high. A little aggressive but I wanted to see what it could do.

Obviously that works better on some subjects (sharp lines) than others. I don't get very good results for motion blur on most species.

Photo AI or Sharpen AI? There was a thread here a few years ago about Sharpen AI with birds as subjects and it looked pretty good. I’ll try a bird shot if I can find one to work on. I usually delete OOF shots before importing into LrC. I kept the spitfire because I only had a few shots of it.

I mean Photo AI for motion blur, not images that are OOF. Does sharpen AI have a motion blur algorithm?

It seems that each piece of Topaz software is slightly different in operation and constantly changing. I really wish they were all integrated into one program, so we don't have to try several or do them in sequence.

That is the Topaz wants to do. When Photo AI becomes as as good as the individual apps it will replace them.

I found it difficult to consider going with their AI version since it does not provide the detail options currently in their individual apps. Yup, can see where they are most likely headed but certainly not going to help pave the way by purchasing AI until it surpasses what the individual apps can produce. JMTC

I hope not at the rate it is. The controls are far too crude. I want more controls.

That exactly it. Based on what I read and an email from support is they want Photo AI to be as robust as the other apps.
