Photographed the Pacific Air Show a couple weeks ago in Huntington Beach, CA. Shot with the Canon EOS 1D X and the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary. Thoughts on how to improve are welcome!

Generally most lenses are at their sharpest around ƒ8. The DoF with ƒ8 will be plenty given the planes are hundreds of feet away. Some of the jet frames appear to be a tad soft. This could be due to technique, lens diffraction or it might be due to processing for the web. Do they look sharp on your monitor in LR 5.5? The hardest part is keeping the focal point on very fast moving jets. Takes lots of practice.

I normally shoot jets at ƒ8 @ 1/2000-2500 with the lowest ISO possible that allows this shutter speed. Props are trickier as each plane can have their engine(s) running at different rpms. Usually the range is somewhere between 1/125 - 1/250. I shoot a couple of test shots to determine what works best for each plane. With props I always set the ISO to 100 then it's closing down the Ap. to obtain the desired shutter speed. Unfortunately IQ starts to be affected once diffraction enters into the equation due to severely closed Ap's. It's a trade off, but getting a blurred prop is important. For me the body is always in manual mode. JMTC

REALLY helpful, thanks Matt! Great to know that f/8 is sufficient for jets in general.

1. This was my 1st time shooting an airshow, so while I tried to get that propeller blur at 1/60 - 1/125 shutter speeds, I usually ended up blurring the whole plane Definitely a matter of practice & technique, and I'll make that a focus to improve on my next shoot. Good tip about ISO 100 + stopping down for props.

2. The photos are a bit sharper in LR, and I noticed a sharpness falloff upon resizing to 1000px & uploading here on FM. However, a number of the photos were also cropped, so that also contributed to some slight softness Purpose of cropping = fill frame more + cut out vignetting at corners, which was more than I anticipated.

My trips to airshows are infrequent so I need to practice before I go. I have the convenience of having a 60 mph road about 1726 feet from my front porch. I practice panning vehicles driving on that road using the slower shutter speeds you described, mostly 1/60th. I use spot focus when I practice trying to keep the spot on the center of a wheel, exterior mirror or signage on a door.

You may need a neutral density filter if you have too much light when shooting at f/8 using the slower shutter speeds. (Just helping you spend your money if you don't have one.)

BTW, how do you feel about your shots and is there something else could we help you with?

Ray

Thanks Ray, great suggestion! Overall I'm satisfied with the shots, just keeping an open mind should someone have tips on how they'd do something different and/or better

I use a 3 stop ND filter with prop planes, that way I can keep the lens open wider, of course it depends on the lighting.

Great shot, Wayne! Thanks for the tip on the 3-stop ND filter, too

My goal is to try to eventually get to the point I can shoot full disk prop photos and I want to stay in the 100-200 ISO range. I look at lens charts on sites like lenstip that show the effects of different apertures on lens sharpness, it is easy see where lenses best ranges are. Two bladed props are going to need a slower shutter speeds than a four bladed prop, some of the modern stunt planes seem to me to have faster prop speeds than the old fighters also. Here is another shot at 1/160th, I want to go lower as I improve.

@Waynedb123 - Great goal, those full disk prop blurs look the best. Excellent 2nd image, too I like the analytical approach...definitely necessary to engineer a result!

I did my first air shows this year with a Nikon Z9 and with the electronic shutter. I found that to my eyes panning at 1/160th the prop looked best.

Variable pitch props can allow lower RPMs which will require slower shutter speeds on aircraft with three or more props. This is a B-17 at 1/60th, no full disc.

EOS 7D, 400 mm, f/5.7, 1/60 at f/18

Both are 3 bladed props; my point is, RPM matters.

@Ray Swindle - beautifully done. Nailed that focus + perfect prop blur. Thanks for the tips!
