2018 and 2019 were my years to catch-up and update/upgrade SLR/DSLR equipment. I retired in 2018, and bought a new D5, funded by a cheque for my unused, accumulated “comp time.” My wife and I each got new D850 cameras, and she got a new Z6. (She was/is a dedicated Nikon shooter, and the mentor who coaxed me into finally starting serious photography.)
There are no lenses remaining on my grail-quest list. I had dreamed of a 600/4 or 400/2.8, but a left shoulder injury, in September 2017, was still healing/rehabilitating in April 2018, at which time I scuttled plans for the once-in-a-lifetime super-telephoto, and bought a Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4 ZF.2.
Eventually, my shoulder healed, but I determined that I would never want to shoot hand-held with anything heavier than our t Nikkor 500mm f/4P. We bought a pre-owned 500mm f/4E FL, that was available locally, for a quite attractive price. This is our “peak” telephoto lens. (We have kept the much-loved 500mm f/4P.)
When the tea leaves and chicken bones made it look like there would be no D6, I bought a second new D5, when Nikon USA dropped the price by $1K. I financed this one, at 0% interest, through the merchant, and paid it off early. I reckoned that this would be my final, “peak” DSLR. I think that this was in late 2019.
The city paid-off my accumulated, unused “personal time off” bi-weekly, at a half-pay rate, in effect a kind of long vacation, which ended in April 2022. So, yes, I am about “done,” buying, unless I somehow convince myself to add a D6, or perhaps a spare D850. I might try renting a D6, to see if it does anything truly significant, that a D5 cannot do.
If we ever get around to adding a Z9, it will probably be because my wife decides that it would benefit her bird-counting, in low light, or similar pursuits.
