Late 2017 to late 2019 was our time period to update/upgrade Nikon camers and lenses, starting with replacing my wife’s D7000 cameras that had been ruined during Hurricane Harvey, with a pair of new D500 cameras. Then, starting in 2018, taking advantage of a modest financial windfall, post-retirement, we added my new D5, her new D850, my new D850, and her new Z6, in that order. We added a few lenses, ending with a pre-owned 500/4E in late 2019. With these numerous upgrades and updates, we have largely stopped buying Nikon gear, and seem quite well-set.
Canon EOS EF was my original primary system, and remains important for macro/close range. I have not purchased anything significant for this system, since 2018. I recently noticed how much dust had settled my my newest Canon camera, a 5D Mark IV. (I tend to shoot macro with a 7D Mark II.)
I added the Leica M system, in early 2018. I had scuttled plans to add a Nikkor 600/4 or 400/2.8, because a left shoulder injury still needed to finish rehabilitation, so, I would not be wanting to heft long lenses, for a while. I bought a pre-owned Leica 50mm Summilux-M ASPH lens, a new M10 camera, and, a Zeiss Otus 85mm ZF.2, with the funds I would have used to buy the Nikkor super-tele.
Thus far, I have not missed having a Nikkor 600/4 or 400/2.8 lens. The lighter-weight 500/4E, which I tend to use hand-held, suffices quite well, and I am glad that it weighs less than a 600/4 or 400/2.8! (The lighter-weight 500/5.6 PF is not very tempting, as so much of our bird shooting is done in fading light.)
I contemplated adding a newer Leica camera, in early 2022, but decided to hold, at the 24MP level, with that system. I can do my high-resolution shooting with a D850. One can go broke trying to build multiple “complete” systems.
Cameras and lenses do not pay our bills. Each of us used cameras, in our public service careers, for evidentiary/forensic/crime scene photography, but, we are now retired. She is seriously involved in volunteer work, that sometimes involves the need for serious images of things, but our current gear suffices.
Z9? Nice to have, eventually. No hurry. The first Z9 would probably be for Her. (She is the more-senior photographer, by far, the mentor who guided my early path into serious photography.)
