p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Smoked Aspens

This is a scene that I had long sought to photograph, but conditions were never right. And then in the summer of 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, in the midst of immense smoke from terrible fires, I found these trees like this. It is for me an imperfect photo during imperfect times. On this trip I endeavored to not set foot inside a single building, which I succeeded. I stayed away from other people entirely. But also the intense smoke made shooting difficult. The air quality index near where I pulled over was over 800. Between 151 and 200 is considered unhealthy. 301 and higher is hazardous. This was nearly triple the hazardous level. So the mere act of getting outside the car was oppressive within the smoke affected areas, the main source of which was the “Camp Fire” which was an incredibly explosive fire in the central Sierra Nevada. So I pulled over and tried with haste to find a composition. Then I climbed up on top of my Xterra with my camera and tripod and shot this pano. There’s one thing I’m not happy about, and perhaps it will bother you as well, you’ll have to tell me. But with a smokey mind this is what I came up with before retreating to the relative clear air inside my car. I have not before and so far not since encountered this stand of aspens so perfectly colored. The smoke diffused light further enhanced the warmth, as the whole of the landscape was bathed in apocalypse tint by the sun filtering through the smoke which originated many 10’s of miles away. Tell me what you think, as I have long debated posting this image.

I know that stand well, and it is hard to get them at just the right point in the color transition.

Too bad about the smoke. A few times in recent years over there I've had to drive with a N95 mask on!

I think that it is a great picture and I admire your tenacity in acquiring it. Since you asked for further advice, if it was mine, I would darken the aspens on the left side to match those on the far right side of the image.

This is the new normal for landscape photography in the western U.S.
Even though officials are saying this was a light year for wildfires in Washington, we have been and still are suffering from the smoke of the Bolt Creek fire that has been burning for just over a month and expectations are it will be the end of this month before it is fully contained.
During this fire, Seattle recorded the third worst air quality on the planet. This a city that boasts it's clean air.
For the last several years, summertime landscape photography has been significantly impacted by wildfire smoke and I expect it will continue and get worse as the climate warms and droughts continue.

We as both landscape and wildlife photographers now have to plan around heat and fire as part of our quest for images. I wish us all the best of luck going forward, even though I don't have much faith in things getting better in my lifetime.

Kurt, I think the glow and the intense color of the trees does make this a compelling image. I appreciate the backstory, too, and your quest to capture these trees in all of their autumn glory! Kudos!!!

I really like the image and the smoke certainly enhances the golden glow of the photo. I considered a trip to the Eastern Sierra that year but abandoned due to all the fires/smoke. Looks like you at least got some good shots with ideal foliage.

No one has mentioned the thing that bothers me about this composition, haha, so I guess that's a sign that it shouldn't bother me at all.

The smoke certainly enhanced the scene, though I would prefer by far to have not had any of it.
Interestingly on the trip for this photo, the smoke was intense but stopped, as if at an invisible wall, just at the south edge of June Lake Loop. I'm not sure what prevented the smoke from filling Mono Basin as well, but the barrier held for the weekend at the least. I camped north of Mono Lake where the air was shockingly clear.

Thank you all for the feedback.
